Subs for most things.
I think Kung Fu movies benefit from a bad dub, though. It's endearing. Kung Fu Hustle has an intentionally bad dub and it's far more entertaining than subtitles as a result.

kuatorises, Godzilla movies are often better subbed because the dubs are usually badly done. Even a film as bad as All Monsters Attack is surprisingly better subbed. Then again, who watches Godzilla films for the dialogue?

I prefer subtitles even though it's not too difficult to watch and read at the same time.

If the movie was produced with a foreign language version, and a dubbed version, then I'll take the dubbed version. But only if the director and producer wanted to produce an English language version and got actual voice actors. If it was just done after the fact, then I'll pass on the dubbed version and take subtitles.
Watching an English language show or video with captions on is totally frustrating to me. I only focus on reading the captions.
I'm looking forward to the day when we can just upload new foreign languages into our minds.

I can't stand dubbing, even if the movie is in a language that is completely unfamiliar to me, like Korean.

The only acceptable use of dubbing is in martial arts movies.

thank you all for your responses. So while it looks like subtitles are overwhelmingly winning, there are still some people that would be completely turned off by it too and I dont want to disregard that. And to be honest that is what I have been "warned" that is especially true in the US, maybe because English is so dominant all over the world that growing up you are were perhaps not really forced to use another language other than a few classes at school maybe, thus you didnt get used to A] using another language on daily bases but also B] reading it in media. And may be then more distracted by it as an adult compared to people whos it is second language and who grew up being used to reading/hearing bilingually.
what would be interesting is to know if there is truly no distinction for you when you are listening to an english spoken film and have english subtitles on - provided its your first language. do you then find it just as distracting?
i dont want to assume this is about anyones quickness in reading, i am more likely to think its just an end result of a long term habit. I prefer everything subtitled but at the same time I grew up watching tv with ONLY dubbed films and have to say that when it is done well it can be pretty good. there are a few actors or rather roles whose voice the way I know it from tv in my home country i actually prefer. but only few come to mind. but many more of those where it does hurt the movie i agree.

Let's get real for a second. You miss stuff when you're concentrating on reading the subtitles.
No you don’t. It’s so easy to just glance at the text quickly and get everything, doesn’t require any concentration. Watching subtitled movies without missing anything is not even remotely difficult.

Subtitles, except over animation. When its animation I don't mind, because what difference does it make how a drawings words are matched to the cartoon mouths movement.

I watch everything subtitled. Even English and French movies. This way I don’t miss any of the quiet or badly pronounced dialogue.

With Jackie Chan movies, does it really matter?

My preferred choice; subtitles.
Although old-school Kung-fu films... dubbing is hard to beat.

Watching subtitled movies without missing anything is not even remotely difficult. 1. I realize your type often forgets about us peasants, however you must realize there are people who are simply not capable of doing things you can do. We weren't blessed with your gifts.
People like you just like to pretend your superior. I think it's got something to do with preserving the original artwork or some bull shit like that. And before you come back at me and say, "When did I say that?" In your response to my post. You didn't simply say you prefer subtitles.
2. Your lying. You never missed a thing while going back and forth between some titles and the visuals? Yeah, you're lying.

Dub for me. I don't go to movies to read. I think it depends on the type of movie, but yeah I'm with you.

With Jackie Chan movies, does it really matter? With that type of movie, dubbing is probably actually better. It's an action movie for Christ's sake, who wants to spend time reading and missing potential butt kickings?

You kinda lose on the actor's performance if it's dubbed, isn't it? Anyway, subtitles for me. always

It generally doesn't matter to me if it's a film I really want to watch. However the dubbing would need to be good otherwise give me subtitles.
