Anyone else watch either of these? They’re as goofy as anything, but I’m watching Expedition Unknown’s “Hunt for the Metal Library” right now, and it’s a lot of fun. I think you’d like it, politicidal: it functions as a fairly decent Raiders of the Lost Ark pastiche. (The archaeologist’s daughter even looks a bit like Karen Allen! ) Josh Gates, who hosts both shows, is a bit too credulous, overdramatic, and Bear Grylls-esque, but the ridiculous mystery is fun. I didn’t believe a minute of it, but it’s fun. It also functions as a neat travelogue. And I actually thought the DB Cooper episode (not sure which of the shows it was) had a good (if hard-to-believe) and, to me, novel theory about Cooper.

I could really never get into Destination Truth. But I really liked his Expedition Unknown. Personally I’ve always found Josh Gates kind of dorky but friendly enough. Btw have you ever seen “Digging For The Truth”? It was on The History Channel before it became the Hillbilly Channel and was hosted by an archaeologist named Josh...Bernstein. He was just a pretty cool host. Even wore the hat.

They didn’t find anything, of course, but for a reality show it was a decent adventure. I don’t think I’ve seen Digging for the Truth; I’ll look it up.

I love Josh in general, and I love Expedition Unknown. He also has a new show, Legendary Locations, that I haven't checked out yet--apparently a bit more of just a travel show, which I always thought he should do. The travel segments, Josh joking around, shopping, trying food, dealing with transportation issues, etc. are always some of the most entertaining things in his shows.
Destination Truth I found more frustrating in that the format was pretty stupid--especially the fact that no matter what it was, they'd "hunt" for it at night, and just one night. The research was a complete joke, but I still enjoyed Josh (and his crew) being Josh.
I'd like to see a Destination Truth-type show done more seriously with respect to the research angle (though still with plenty of joking around), less sensationalistically. The research aspect should be done more in the vein of River Monsters--I also loved that show, loved Jeremy Wade. (Even though at first I thought I might not be interested because I don't care very much about fishing. But Jeremy was so likeable/charismatic and intense/passionate about his field, with good travel, research, educational, etc. aspects).

I watched a few episodes of both shows, but I found both lacking depth of information. I agree with what you said about them making a DT kind of show but more serious. I don't like fishing but I've watched Wade's show too, mostly because of his enthusiasm.

I don't like fishing but I've watched Wade's show too, mostly because of his enthusiasm. Well, and Destination Truth unfortunately used the "ghost hunting show" model. Producers must have believed that people wouldn't be interested if they didn't sensationalize things a lot, if the cast didn't behave as if they'd discovered (via "Earth-shattering reactions") something "mysterious" every episode. Also, the mere fact that they always did their field research at night, plus a lot of the equipment they used, basically made each exploration a ghost hunt. That approach might not have been Josh's decision. It might have been forced on him more or less. (And I have to wonder, given his background, if Josh even wanted to do a cryptozoology/supernatural show initially--that might have been the opportunity initially given to him. I have a feeling that Expedition Unknown was far more "his baby," which he was able to push through once he had some clout, because it's far more in the wheelhouse of his background . . . unfortunately, there's not an endless supply of topics of the type that the producers are looking for, hence why he's also started the Legendary Locations show.) Ultimately, Josh is doing personality/entertainment shows as much as anything else, which I'm fine with--I prefer that over a more dry approach to doing a documentary. Sometimes stuff like Nova tends to put me to sleep, and sometimes they obsess too much over some small detail for my tastes. As I said above, I've always thought that one of the best parts of Josh's shows is his travelogue stuff--for my tastes, he has just the right disposition/attitude for that--good-natured, but slightly irreverant, goofy, self-effacing but still confident, a bit of a "fish out of water" approach, etc. That stuff is in the vein of, say, Ian Wright's Globe Trekker (aka Lonely Planet) episodes, and I absolutely love those. If I want to learn more about what he's exploring, more of the background, etc., I read about it after I watch the show.

Anyone seen this episode? Sounds like a great premise for an Indiana Jones movie or something?

. I don’t think I’ve seen Digging for the Truth; I’ll look it up. Meant to upload the intro. Only found a really old teaser.
Ah the good old days when History was about...history.

I'm a big Josh Gates fan, he never really discovers anything but its fun to watch and he seems like a really nice guy. I also enjoyed the show with Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack driving around the country. I find these shows very relaxing.
