I mean, they've been making these movies for almost 2 decades now and this is the best they can come up with? Even the CW and ABC superhero shows have better costumes than this.

hmmm. that is the best part isnt it. xmen is not about costumes. costumes have never played the part in a good xmen story or film
let mcu keep the costumes that is part of the big toy sales disney need for the kid's market.
let xmen keep the story and more serious grown up movies...

Sounds like a pretty crappy excuse to me. Using that logic none of the superheroes really need costumes for what they do, especially the MCU ones since majority don't keep a secret identity. But the X-men decided to go with costumes and they're still crappy costumes regardless of what excuses you come up with.

They've only nailed the costumes of the Ensemble X-men movies once. (excluding Deadpool 1 and 2 those were nailed too) IMHO First Class nailed them except for Magneto's red costume at the end looked cheap. I understand why we had to have the black leather ones in X1-X3. I don't particularly like them though. The audience wouldn't accept comic accurate costumes back then. So we got the Matrix-y black leather costumes and The "Yellow Spandex" joke.

We all knew the costumes at the end of Apocalypse weren't going to come back thanks to their convenient 10 year time-jumps. It was a cop-out, thrown in at the last second of the film to shut fans up. That's what you get when you have filmmakers with little creativity/imagination that are insistent on a grounded universe and are ashamed/embarrassed of the more fantastical elements of the source material. We're right back to generic flight suits with yellow X's thrown on. No personality whatsoever. They probably won't even wear these for more than a couple of scenes and will mostly be in their civilian clothing.
I'm sure the drama and the acting will have some merit, but after 20 years of repetitive blandness, I'm ready for some change.

You realise the xmen are going to be like the current Avengers just character swapped right, with everything else pretty much the same?

It gets even worse when you look at their fitness gear up close. These uniforms aren't much more protective than your average lightweight, zip-up jacket you'd wear to the gym. This is marginally cool.

Here are the uniforms from the source that the film is trying to mimick. The upper garments are more like a puffy, fall jacket.

Yeah, I can't wait. Enjoy this last film while you have it. I'm sure you already have your praise-filled review ready to go.

The X-Men is a directionless franchise under Fox, even when they hit a homerun they've never really known where to go next. The MCU, for all its faults, has more going for it creatively.

This is what happens when you let the Fox-Men vision of the X-Men completley warp you mind. I truly believe that he believes these movies are the source material. And then Fox is like...

The Gifted, Deadpool, and Legion don't really line up too well with one another if you really put enough thought into it.

The costumes are weak, they've generally always been that way unfortunately. The best looking costumes were at the end of Apocalypse....now they're gone? That's a shame.
Deadpool has a fantastic costume so I don't see why the others can't look better when those movies are made for more money.

Funny you are about costumes. so tell me how will mcu adapt the X-Men mutant massacre? if Disney had DC how would they have adapted the dark knight returns. trust me batman bulky ugly costumes in that story adds nothing to the greatness of frank miller's writing. doses costumes make up for the fact that Disney makes dumbed down idiotic comic movies and cant adapt any classic comic story.

I will say this, my favorite costume... cough cough uniform was rogue from the rogue cut. simple and realistic. this is the only non black color I like. I liked the blackness of xmen and Nolan movies. it is part of why they are called grounded movies. deal with it. over the top colourful costumes is just more ways to sell toys, heck even sam raimi Spider-Man was a bit grounded and not as cartoonish looking as homecoming. Ah...the great days of grown up comic movies.

So you can " cough" up a lung for all I care. The X-Men are not S&M porn stars. They are superheroes.

It's based on one of the most far out there comic series around. The costumes are plain boring. They work for the Nolan movies but Batman, Catwoman and Bane did have black costumes to begin with. Deadpool is one of the more grown up superhero movies around being as it's R rated and that has not stopped him from having a costume that people really like so it shouldn't stop anyway else either. Someone like Cyclops or Gambit have pretty simple costumes as well when compared to others. Yeah this green Power Ranger wasn't cartoonish at all. They definitely didn't sell any toys for those movies either.
