That university needs to find better academics to fund. What a waste of money.

Wow, Russian trolls really think that promoting dislike of a movie is going to fracture American society? That's... I don't know what to call that. Dumb seems like too small a word.

Now that just might be the most bizarre thing I’ve read about since...last week.

Dude this just came up on my feed and I came here to post it. You beat me to it.
What I was going to ask was. Rather true or not how do you feel about social manipulation for real world gains? Do you think this could actually drive a wedge between the average joe? Is reinforcing conservative or progressive biases through pop culture an effective means of disorder in a society?

What a load of horseshit.

What a load of horseshit. some of it maybe. The use of Bots is easy to determine, so the study is probably right on that. Now the intent of people using Bots is murkier. You would have to interpret that. Also the percentage of negative tweets as a whole would be easy to verify. 21% of tweets being negative surprised me.

The very conceit of tying tweets to reality is dumb. Even if one social media outlet was distorted, that's in no way a refutation of TLJ being panned across EVERY applicable platform by people who paid to see it.

I think it's the theory of the echo chamber. I can kind of see that too. My father was always a staunch conservative. It's where I get some of my leanings in certain areas. The last 5-10 years of his life he got more so. I can tie that to 3 different things. 1 I bought him a computer and showed him how to use it. He was really not computer savy. (He died in 2013 at the age 70) So I bookmarked all the sites he wanted to use. Some were fun like Golf channel and a pinochle/canasta group. Most were conservative online groups. 2 Was he was a closet Racist. If he knew you and you were white he would be open around you. (he actively suppressed it around me and one of my brothers. After a huge knock down argument us 3 got in back in the 90's. When my brother was dating a Afro-American Girl.) When Obama was elected by Democrats this pushed him farther conservative. 3. If he wasn't watching sports then the Tv was on Fox News. The Echo chamber doesn't convert people it just nudges them along the path they were on.

Yeah... who's to say that his data isn't manipulated? Who's to say that this paper itself isn't politically or corporately motivated?
I can tell you what's clear. The fanbase spoke about the quality issues by their box office response. TLJ eventually started to underperform, and Solo flopped big time. There's no arguing that. And Russian bots don't block ticket sales.

Man I can't believe that they're using the "Russian Bots" excuse for the negativity towards TLJ.
Because it's so hard to believe that some people just don't like the movie.

And LO & BEHOLD it's the same divisive bickering usually with a strong advantage for the naysayers. I can only say, if the Russians are behind it all they are doing a remarkably better job than with election manipulation, sanctions, economy and civil rights.

The "study" is of course only a personal research paper by one single guy. It's based on a preciously small sample size of tweets (<1000) and is not-randomized and thus suffering from selective data samples (cherry picking) and strong interpretative bias. Others can dive deeper into the methodology.
That being said, everybody thinking that there is a systematic and funded effort by the Russians to subvert a Space Opera's reception dwells on the dim side of the Force (to put it mildly).
What the study confirms, not demonstrates, is the observation that modern popular film reception is strongly influenced and filtered by political aspects. We have seen that already since TFA on ImDb and long before that.

Dude definitely got more radicalized and right-leaning later in life when retired and sat home watching Fox all day. Almost like that's an intended consequence...

Dude definitely got more radicalized and right-leaning later in life when retired and sat home watching Fox all day. Almost like that's an intended consequence... His racism was weird. It was more like a intangible philosophy than an active hate. In every other aspect he was a sweet heart of a guy. Give his shirt of his back, but just held this weird fucking bias. He would never use the n-word because the sharecroppers that worked his grandad's land had a son his age and told him it wasn't right when he was a kid. It didn't stop him from calling Obama "That Black Bastard." Or complain that the city was being over run by "thugs." At the same time he had black golfing buddies that came over to the house on the regular. It's almost as if his Dad kinda beat it into him. It's a weird dichotomy he held. My mom was the normal type of racist. Didn't want non-whites in her church, home or place of work. It's frigged up but they raised 4 decidedly non-racist kids. Part of our normal rebellion that all kids go through to stand out from their parents was to throw that shit out. Also helped that where they grew up in segregation we didn't. Add those two things and voilà... I know it's a cliche that we all get more and more conservative as we get older, but man the baby boomer generation took that shit to the extreme.
