I’m guessing everyone here is a fan of this one? I watched it again a few days ago for the first time in years—I thought the gags would make more sense to me after seeing Star Wars, and, you know what, they did! While there are some wonderful moments, I don’t actually find Spaceballs as funny or as clever as many other Brooks films—particularly Young Frankenstein, which I feel is his masterpiece (though Doghouse6 on the Classics Board told me that I should see The Twelve Chairs before making that determination). It was odd, too: some of the gags, especially the fourth-wall ones, just didn’t work for me this time. (I think the best line in the picture is Candy’s, though: “I’m a mog. Half man, half dog. I’m my own best friend.”) Maybe I’m just getting tired of fourth-wall-breaking jokes? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

L.O.L² that you actually saw the parody way before any regular Saga film.

L.O.L² that you actually saw the parody way before any regular Saga film. I know… Spaceballs is a mixed bag. Some gags land and are borderline brilliant, some are just lazy and unfunny.
Ironicallly, Space Balls seems to have influenced the Sequels, or at least there are some oft discussed similarities.

Spaceballs was pretty divisive when released compared to other classic Mel Brooks parodies. I'm guessing because a lot of the humor was references or something? Maybe the scifi setting led to it looking a whole lot goofier than his other films.

Maybe the scifi setting led to it looking a whole lot goofier than his other films. Perhaps, but I don’t really think it looks bad—in fact, I think it looks rather impressive. The desert looks big, the ships look convincing (I mean…they’re silly, of course, but within that framework). I particularly like Dark Helmet’s control room. There’s a video that I watched— this one—that says the escape-pod sequence was originally intended for Star Wars (sans gorilla, I assume), and I can’t say I’m surprised. (The only scenes where it seems cheesy and low-budget are the ones on the planet—the castle and all that. They come off as particularly weak, third-rate Princess Bride knockoff stuff [and they came out the same year. That’s funny].) Which is weird because I think Brooks’ direction is pretty lousy in this movie. It’s utterly bland and pedestrian and, in some sequences, just plain bad. (The desert scene is funny, but Brooks keeps the camera on the last guy far too long—as if the guy is waiting for Brooks to yell “cut”!) And that’s doubly curious because Brooks did a fantastic job keeping Young Frankenstein not only uproarious but visually and cinematically interesting as well. Brooks’ two performances in this also aren’t that great, but then Brooks has always been one of the weakest actors in his own movies. On the other hand, Rick Moranis has that wonderful talent of making everything he says seem funny, even when the lines he’s given aren’t all that funny.

Back when parody films were actually good.
Shame that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer effectively killed it.

I thought it was OK when I was a kid but about 10 years ago I got the DVD as a secret santa gift and I rewatched it....holy lord was it awful.
