If you're American you should know Peace Pilgrim! She's one of your heroes
She crossed North America on foot many times speaking out for world peace starting in 1953. She took a vow of poverty only eating when food was offered, or taking shelter when offered. Pretty brave for a single woman in those days. Her main quote was "This is the Way of Peace: Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love." She was killed in a car accident in 1981 on the way to a speaking engagement.

There's a good documentary about her on youtube, and talk of a movie. I hope so! Sadly we're not much closer to peace, but she's inspired many.

Was she advocating a religion to achieve this noble cause?

Was she advocating a religion to achieve this noble cause? No, not any one religion, although she did speak of God a lot. I would say very spiritual.
