I guess I'm a space nerd. It started with the Mercury launches which I vaguely remember. There was a brand of potato chips where each bag had a plastic coin featuring one of the seven Mercury astronauts. That's how I learned their names. Later I built all the plastic models of various spacecraft I could find. I don't attend conferences, but I've caught space exhibits in museums. I agree the Smithsonian collection is fantastic. Space exploration was really accelerated in the 1960s. It was disappointing to see it slow down in the following decades. It looks like it's about to pick up again in the 2020s. China, Japan and India are making plans for moon bases after 2030. By now I had hoped to see humans on Mars, but it might be a couple of more decades.

I don't know about Space nerd but I have always being fascinated with the universe and the place of our tiny planet dancing around a star in a corner of a massive galaxy.
as for what I would love to see in my life time? the discovery of life outside earth or a colony on Mars.

I've always found astronomy fascinating, and have tried to keep myself educated on the subject throughout my life. Space exploration has been a concurrent interest. I did get to visit NASA in Houston around five years ago, although I have never seen a space launch.

Oh my yes. Back in the mid- to late-60's, while my father worked on the space program at Cape Canaveral/Kennedy for Boeing (in conjunction with NASA), we lived in an adjacent town, Merritt Island. It was not always pleasant living there (thanks to high humidity and swarms of mosquitoes), but we had almost a ringside seat for the moon-launches. I grew up with space. Some might say with plenty of that between my ears... Many years later, I was lucky enough to meet and later marry a scientist/musician who was (in his own words) a space case --nuts about aviation and space, and an avid reader (like me) of Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Silverberg, etc.

for those of you who are in the US or able to come here I highly recommend Spacefest in Arizona. Incredible few days filled with panels of astronauts, scientists, engineers, authors, and other space enthusiasts. You learn whats new, whats coming up, what were some od the most important events in history of space exploration like for those who lived it, and you get to talk to like minded people from all over the world. I for sure will be there next year again... www.spacefest.info

You must have experienced some really important moments really close up! Wonderful!

Another thread inspired me to create this one. I have not always been so fascinated with space and astronomy and space exploration, but in the last 7 years or so it really grew on me, mostly because of personal connection to people that work in that field. I started traveling around to visit some of the most significant places, exhibitions, museums and conferences and gatherings related to space exploration and became a total fan, to the extent of becoming quite nerdy about it (and actually tearing up when watching Falcon Heavy side booster landing earlier this year, or when first visiting the Atlantis exhibition in Kennedy Space Center). I wonder if there is anybody else out here like that, and if so, do you go to events like Spacefest etc? And what do you yet hope to see re space exploration in your lifetime? For me, I am waiting for return to Moon and humans on Mars. No way am gonna quit life before that! Yes. I love outer space. That is the future for humanity.

Yes. The 60s space race captivated Catman during his kitten years. To boldly go where no Catman has gone before...

thats such a great song, because it reminds me of a great old saturday night live sketch where Chris Farley did Meatloaf and singing this song with breaks of Adam Sandler doing Eddie Vedder AND if I remember correctly Rob Schneider did something by Aerosmith? But I may be mistaken on that part. I cant find the sketch now would love to see it again… I think it was in this episode…. great memories, it was the first time I saw SNL... OMG now i CAN NOT find the clip of Farley singing it and its driving me crazy… see what you did?
