From the Classic Era: If there is a trial in the Big City, newspapers will put out an “Extra” to report developments. Young boys carrying a bundle of papers will call out, “Extra!” A character from the story will be seen buying a copy. To indicate a breaking news story, we see fresh newspapers sliding down a conveyer belt. One will come spinning out and freeze so we can read the headline (mocked in “Airplane”) If a detective knocks on a door and it slowly swings open, he will find a dead body inside. In a Marx Brothers movie, Groucho will talk rings around everybody except Chico, who is the only person who ever gets the better of Groucho. Get yer tootsie fruitsy ice-a cream.
