Not really worried about people's opinions what start or end with "lol" or "lmao." No kidding. If you read that joker's posts, it's obvious he's a pretty stupid troll who even goes around stalking other people there (um, Nicko specifically). If a person like that thinks this show sucks, good riddance.

The speech pattern reminds me of a hate fueled poster that I encountered on here when this site first started, then they were banned, shocking. They also baited people with their wild opinions and then were belittled with a series of insults and mom's etc.

7 episodes in and and the show is getting better. The constant jumping from past scenes with the family in the house and present day scenes is a bit confusing.

Has anyone started watching the new Netflix series? I’m still undecided if I should or not… (I’m a big fan of the book, and this is supposed to be completely different.) I just finished watching episode 6. I think the series starts to take off in episode 4, and I really liked episode 5, but I didn't think episode 6 was as great as people have said. Someone else has mentioned how the house has no atmosphere or sense of dread to it and I agree, but I can say is I think it is definitely worth a watch. I haven't read the book so I have no idea where it is different from it.

Episode 6 is great for the technical achievement, it's like a filmed play, one long scene without cutaways. The cast rehearsed for six weeks just for that episode. It's a powerful moment with all of the cast together.

Has anyone started watching the new Netflix series? I’m still undecided if I should or not… (I’m a big fan of the book, and this is supposed to be completely different.) I've finished the series now and I have to say it was good. I forget which episode it was, but the one where the sisters are in the car driving to the house, and the ghost jumps out between them, was the biggest scare I've had in a long time. I thought the last episode was a kind of cop-out though. Finally though we see that the father wasn't an ass after all, which I had thought he was. Still, the lore didn't make much sense. Why are some of the ghosts creepy looking while some are not? For example, the mother, Abigail, the father, etc. It made it seem like the latter would have a happy ending together in the house, which wasn't so bad after all. If you do watch it, let me know what you think, and how different it is from the book.

I'm going to try to give this show a shot. I LOVE the book and the original movie. I previously tried to get into episode 1 and couldn't do it but I was very distracted by other stuff at the time so I'm going to force myself to sit down and focus on it. We'll see...

I watched the 1st four episodes last night and there were several scenes where the hair on my arms stood up. That hasn't happened for a long time.

I'm still not sure how I feel about it. It grabbed me pretty quickly and I was hooked for while, but then I felt like the acting got very soap operay all of a sudden. I believe it was the episode where they all met at the funeral home. It kind of remains that way off and on through the remainder of the series. I don't mind something being melodramatic, but something about it felt a little off.
I didn't mind happy ending at all, but I didn't really understand how or why the ghosts simply stopped tormenting the family. They drove the mother and Nell to suicide, Luke to addiction, and then just suddenly stop? And the mom and dad go on living as ghosts in the same house with the ghosts responsible for their misery?
And why didn't anyone in this family talk to each other? The mom openly tells Theo that she has some sort of psychic/empathetic abilities, and her husband supposedly knows this, yet Theo doesn't make anyone else aware of this? Various people see ghosts throughout this series, sometimes together, and they don't make anyone else aware? Theo has her abilities, but can't believe Luke saw the torso ghost in the basement? Come on. Or the father and Theo seen the ghost in the funeral home, but don't mention it to anyone else at all? Or what about the tall man with the hat? He follows Luke his entire life, but then just stops? Stuff like that was driving me nuts.
I was genuinely creeped out by the torso dude in the basement, the first time we saw the ghost with the cane in the hat, and several other scenes – and I feel like I liked the show, but it seems like I'm criticizing a lot.

The first time we see The Man With The Cane And The Hat is genuinely creeptastic! I actually got goosebumps the first time that I saw him, however by the time the show ended I felt like that genuine emotion was wiped out. We know almost nothing about the ghosts, why they tortured the family, and why they suddenly stopped.

You're right there, we never learned much about the past or who the ghosts had been or what happened to them. A little more info wouldn't have hurt. I guess, in the end, it was really more of a character driven show and less about the horror plot.

It’s taken a long while since I’ve posted the OP, but I’m finally taking a look the first episode. Will chime in with a few thoughts!
1. Of which my first is that Dad’s pretty creepy.
By the way, folks, are there a lot of jump scares, or is it more atmosphere?

Dr. Markway’s “preternatural” speech in the mouth of this character sounds pretty silly.

I didn’t really like this first episode, but I don’t know how much of that is the show’s fault and how much it is that it uncomfortably hit home for me; I’ve been dealing with a tense family situation since the beginning of the year. It makes me wonder why I watch this stuff. But it’s technically well-done and holds your interest. It also didn’t help that the house looked just like a spooky house in a dream I had last night.

For own satisfaction, I can at least rationalize That the crazy flapper Hill ghost lady wanted Olivia to kill the children because she killed her own kids and ghosts tend to live in the past and/or are stuck in a cylical hell. But then why did she give up so easily? Why was the bowler hat guy following Luke? Why was Nell the Bent Neck Lady? There seem to be no real point to any of the ghosts other than the flapper lady; who only appeared towards the end of the show.

They stopped haunting the family because Hugh Crain agreed to kill himself and stay at Hill House with his wife and Nell.

When Luke was having cravings or trying to get the herion was the only time he was around. Nelll was haunting herself with the Bent Neck Lady. It was how she ended up killing herself. The other ghosts were all people the house had taken. Too many of them to go into all their stories.
