I was going to start a post about this one. One of the three horror movies I grew up with, I loved it, it scared the hell out of me, it gave me nightmares, still loved it.
This actually used to be shown on New Year's Eve when I was a kid, then they quit doing that, but since we got the DVD it's become a tradition that my mother and I watch it every New Year's Eve.
I said on IMDb, there's something about this movie that is not typical of the 1950s teen horror/alien sci fi movies, there's something different about it. For me it was never just 'another' teen monster movie. There were pieces of dialogue that stuck with me as a kid and still do today. The one that always got my attention was:
Steve: Dave, look at me! Do I look like somebody's playing a practical joke? Am I laughing?! Or am I scared stiff?
It always made perfect sense to me as a kid.
Another one I always liked was when he's out with Jane and says "You know, plenty of people in their right minds thought they saw stuff that didn't exist, like flying saucers. The light was just right in the angle of the imagination. And oh boy if that's what this is, this is just an ordinary night, and you and I are going to go home to sleep, and tomorrow the sun will shine just like yesterday, good old yesterday."
It's never a boring movie, but for me, the 2 best parts are when Steve gets his friends out of the movie and tells them what's going on, because they actually believed him, and when they're blowing the sirens and wailing on the horns to get the whole town up. I got the book from the library once, the children's classic monster series by I think Ian Thorne, and in it they had an extra line of Steve telling Mooch to go to the church and ring the bell to wake up people.
One thing that I like about this movie is it proves smart teenagers in a horror movie are not an oxymoron, and it's too bad there isn't more of that today.
Also major props to this movie for introducing many of us to that rare, obscure and bizarre horror film, Daughter of Horror. It took me many years to find it on tape, but it was worth the search. Who knew Ed McMahon could sound scary?

I hated it. Something about the pacing or something was off. I was disappointed since it's got such a cult status.

Great flick, far better than the 1988 remake.

I actually agree with Leonard Maltin on this one. It's not particularly good, but you can't possibly hate it. It's still rather endearing. I think the '88 remake really outdoes it, though.

I hated it. Something about the pacing or something was off. I was disappointed since it's got such a cult status. It might be that both Steve McQueen and Aneta Corsaut were a bit wooden, as were some of the lesser characters.
Otherwise, it's great.
If you have not yet seen it, you should catch Hagman's Beware the Blob, aka Son of Blob. A humorous take on the whole thing and a sequel that takes up where The Blob finished, in the arctic.
Not great but good.
There are other good "Blob-like" movies around as well to be enjoyed, like X the Unknown.

The part that always gets to me is when Steve sees the doctor getting eaten by The Blob and goes back to his girlfriend and he's in a total state of shock: "Doc...he was all gone! He was all gone" Plus, how could you not like that trippy theme song written by Burt Bacharach?!

I've always loved this movie. I'm a huge fan of 50's horror/sci-fi and a huge fan of Steve McQueen so this is one of my all time favorites.

The basic premise is excellent and the movie is a lot of fun. I did like that the 1988 remake emphasized the horror aspect even more though.

I think I've only seen the remake once and I remember hating it but I was probably biased by my love for the original.

Used to be on telly occasionally when I was a kid. Have memories of liking it, and it being pretty scary in places.
Tried to watch it on DVD as an older gent last year... Couldn't get very far in. It's garbage. Badly made, badly acted. Unwatchable.

I saw this when I was 8 or 9 I'd guess and it's the only movie to ever keep me awake; and once I did fall alseep, give me nightmares. Scared the crap out of me, and I've never seen it again since. Needless to say, I avoided the sequel as well as the remake.

Needless to say, I avoided the sequel as well as the remake. The sequel "Son of Blob/Beware of the Blob" (directed by Larry Hagman, who appears as a homeless man) is REALLY bad and not scary at all. The remake is pretty scary.

I ought to re-watch this because it's been many, many years since I've seen it. I do recall thinking it was okay, and I thought the theme song was very catchy (sung by The Five Blobs).
I really like the remake.
