Every year, there's a big number of people who disagree with the winner of this category. Sometimes they think the winner is bad; other times they think the winner is good but not as much as another nominee. Which movies don't create this debate? These ones come to mind: AMADEUS; CASABLANCA; THE GODFATHER; GONE WITH THE WIND; ON THE WATERFRONT; SCHINDLER'S LIST; UNFORGIVEN.

I'm sure there are always people who would disagree with any one of those. But I'll add a few more that I believe are on a similar level.
It Happened One Night Lawrence of Arabia (Although To Kill a Mockingbird came out that year as well) The Sound of Music The Godfather Part II (Although Chinatown) One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (Although Jaws, but to be fair Jaws has gotten a lot better over time) The Silence of the Lambs (Although Beauty and the Beast) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

It Happened One Night The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Good examples! I think there's a lot of people who think DR. ZHIVAGO deserved to win. Lawrence of Arabia
Godfather Part One and Two See Seto 's post. Patton
In the Heat of the Night
1) Good example! 2) I think there's a lot of people who think THE GRADUATE or even BONNIE & CLYDE deserved to win.

One of the best and most deserving Best Picture Oscar winners for me is MIDNIGHT COWBOY - 69'. I think there's a lot of people who think BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID deserved to win.

Regardless of what people think, was it a worthy winner? How can we know if it was a worthy winner without knowing what people think? How would we know what the general consensus is, unless we asked every single person who know of these films, what they prefer. That's what the internet is for.

There is no possible way to know what people think unless they tell you. Opinions on the internet are not set in stone either, there are many other variables to factor into someone's liking or rating of a film. They would have to have seen all the other films in contention as well and there taste, or therefore lack of taste, would also be a deciding factor. Yes, I know. These discussion have become common knowledge. The ones I hear/read more often as GOODFELLAS > DANCES WITH WOLVES and PULP FICTION/THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION > FORREST GUMP. That's why I feel confident in finding a consensus.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (Although Jaws, but to be fair Jaws has gotten a lot better over time) ...and Nashville, Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon. I think that the 1975 crop is probably the greatest Best Picture slate ever and that Cuckoo's Nest is the weakest - which says more about the strength of the rest than about its own quality, as it is still way ahead of a great many winners.

How would we know what the general consensus is, unless we asked every single person who know of these films, what they prefer. For my own tastes, I don't like BC&TSK. There are also many who may feel that The Wild Bunch or Once Upon A Time In The West were worthy of best picture of the year. In a year of strong film, it is always a hard call to make. I even like Hello Dolly!
Regardless, I still feel that Midnight Cowboy was still the best choice. It was contemporary set, depicted a raw, emotionally gut wrenching human story and was made in a style that still has a modernistic approach about it. The acting was superb, its themes were universal and in a nutshell, I personally feel it is a magnificent achievement in American cinema. One would have to be a fan of westerns to fully appreciate Butch, Wild or Once. I doubt as much divisiveness would be created regarding MC, only by those that perhaps are just casual cinema viewers, or are not that connected to the human condition or spirit.
Yes. The last line of the novel is haunting. It describes Joe's transformation having experienced his first real friendship and then losing the friend - "Because, of course, he was scared now. Scared to death."

Yes, MC and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" I get torn on 75' because of JAWS, even though OFOTCN is perhaps the best choice. I think it's the best year ever for BP nominees. "Jaws" and "One Flew..." are both in my top ten favorite movies. "Nashville" and "Dog Day Afternoon" are both in my top 25 and "Barry Lyndon" I watched for the first time this summer (thank you, TC) and I thought it was wonderful, probably in my top 50 or 60.

Yes, 75 was absolutely grand for its nominees, although I must re-visit Nashville, it is not one of my favorite Altmans'. Nothing can beat out 3 Women of course. If only that was nominated in 77', along with Saturday Night Fever and Close Encounters and get rid of Turning Point, Goodbye Girl and Julia, then that would have been a terrific year for picture noms. Oh, yes. I think one of our greatest common threads, Toasted Cheese, is our reverence for "3 Women". There will never be another movie like "3 Women". Of course, the Academy could never bring themselves to nominate a movie like "3 Women" because it was just too unusual and mystical and utterly non-commercial. And some of them probably wouldn't even understand it. I think it's one of those rare movies that only a handful of people can truly love. I haven't seen CEOTTK, but I did like SNF a lot and thought that John Travolta was excellent, way better than Richard Dreyfuss, who got the Oscar. "The Turning Point" was a big drip. "The Goodbye Girl" was sap city, though I didn't hate it. And "Julia" was as interesting as looking at the same painting for 6 hours.
