...purported to be from Jack the Ripper himself and containing half a human kidney. It was addressed "From Hell". My top choice is Francis Tumblety as the actual murderer.

My choice is that it's someone NO ONE has EVER mentioned and that NO ONE KNOWS who he WAS. What happened to a couple years ago when they said that DNA solved it??

The police at the time, as well as most experts today, regard the "From Hell" letter as a hoax. The kidney itself had been preserved in spirits prior to having been sent to Lusk, and the most plausible scenario is that this was a hoax perpetrated by a medical student who might have access to organs. Remember also that the Yard received hundreds of letters purportedly from Jack the Ripper, and only a handful of them are widely known today. Personally, I agree with RiP that the culprit was a candidate as yet named by anyone. More than that, I do not believe that all five were victims to the same killer. For the same reason that there is a consensus that all 18 were not the work of the same killer. As to the DNA testing a couple years ago, like pretty much all historical DNA testings, it's based chiefly on wishful thinking. And this case was a particularly bad case of just that. The leaps of faith are so numerous that I'd rather link to a brief dissertation explaining them all: www.casebook.org/dissertations/dst-edwards.html
