I think she's fine. While I agree with many people here that they made her too powerful too fast, saying that she is on par with Jar Jar shows that some people are prone to adolescent hyperbole. For me, she does manage to hold my interest without being dull or obnoxious, but that really about it. I liked her more than Jyn Erso who I did find to be dull and generally did not care happen to her, whereas I am at least moderately interested as to where Rey's story is going to go in Episode XI.
All that said, I do agree with the common "too powerful" point. Nothing is more dull than a hero who never takes a beating. Yes, Rey has taken a few hits over the past two films, but compare her to Luke at the end of Empire. Just look at their appearances;
He was beaten to a pulp, lost his hand, and only managed to survives because of Leia. Whereas Rey only has a couple of bruises. Even Anakin took a beating at the end of Clones. Bottom line if a character always "wins" there's no tension.

Even Anakin took a beating at the end of Clones. Bottom line if a character always "wins" there's no tension. it's not only the god-like abilities Rey gets whenever she needs to look good. It's the unwarranted attention, especially through character-breaking hugs, missions, career positions and callings - and her motivation and character design are as clumsy as they are spurious. She is the epitome of fanfic writing, a Mary Sue incarnate. Jar Jar is just a silly supporting character not the lead; when he is put into a unwarranted position such as general or as senator he fails big time - and it has serious consequences. His character design is congruent and though through. So, claiming that Rey is "on par with Jar Jar" is not so much "adolescent hyperbole" but a reasonable writing theory assessment. I would go so far and say Rey is way worse written than Jar Jar. has boipassed the compressor where Han couldn't Leia hugs stranger Rey bc of loss of Han Solo, and ignores friend Chewie and all returning pilots she commands never wielded a light saber before, but beats Master of the Ren several times with Force and saber skills never flew the Falcon or spaceship in space but immediately becomes it's captain over Chewie, ....and stunt-pilots it better than anybody before

Never seen either of the Star Wars movies she’s in. I have to write this Batman story with ( on? for? What’s the right word here?) which I now have writer’s block. (Is that relevant? I’m not entirely sure, and I wrote it.) But I still think she’s cute. Guessing coldenhaulfield would disagree and criticize my tastes in dames, though…

OMG, I like to write stories as well and it almost always Sucked on an EPIC Level whenever I hit Writer's Block! It’s particularly awful when I set myself up to write it in segments and post it on this board! But I think I’m going to complete a bit more tonight, and at least Daisy Ridley’s cute.

I hope you’ll forgive me if I don’t answer your question, Anthony; it is supposed to have a twist ending.

I was all for and even hoping/expecting a really strong and dynamic female lead (possibly Luke's daughter) for the Sequel Trilogy well before it went into production. But Rey (who I don't hate and certainly wouldn't say is as annoying as Jar Jar) isn't even close to being on par with Luke, for the simple reason that she doesn't have an interesting arc and is way too overpowered. A positive female role model and dynamic character she is not. Luke, on the other hand, goes from zero to hero (hero's journey character) in a highly investing way throughout three movies. He's a far more well developed and relatable character. I would have loved a good female heroine that was equal or better than him. If you really put Luke and from A New Hope and Rey from The Force Awakens together, this becomes quite evident.
Rey is already a force god with no training whatsoever and is beloved by everyone, constantly being favored by complete strangers over their life long comrades. She knows how to operate the Millenium Falcon better than Han, despite having just a few minutes knowledge of it, as well as somehow understanding the wookie and droid language with no explanation. Plus she constantly makes the right decisions with seemingly no mistakes and easily gets out of bad situations with little or no effort. It's like the universe bends towards her will, which doesn't make for a convincing or engaging character. Most heroes have flaws, lessons learned, and an arc which is what makes them relatable and interesting. I could go on and on but I think that about covers it.
And before you say that I feel threatened by a female lead and am a "misogynistic bigot" or whatever (just a silly and overly generic excuse), Leia, Ripley, and Sarah Connor are all in my top ten favorite protagonists of all time.

Rey is just a Disney warrior princess with a lightsaber. Da only way it would get worse is if'n her was a Barbie doll with a lightsaber. Problem is dat most other new characters are worse cuz thems either inept clowns or Rey worshippin sycophants or both.

I like Rey because she's hilariously incompetent at everything. I have no idea why people think she's overpowered.

I like Rey because she's hilariously incompetent at everything. I have no idea why people think she's overpowered. Mainly because she learned how to use the force without any training. And wield a lightsaber. But even then, those are just nitpicks which don’t interfere too much with TFA.

I think she is a one of the worst written characters in Star Wars . Holdo, Rose and good old Jar jar become Shakespearian examples of congruent character writing next to her. I think you like her bc she is girl despite the fact that she is an androgynous, fugly dog-faced beast. Fixed. Oh Colden, you WISH you could get some of that. Even a sniff would make you feint.

And now I have seen both of the Star Wars movies she’s in. And, well, my opinion of her hasn’t really changed much. Rey is a horribly-written character in The Force Awakens, and the Jedi mind trick/tied-up scene is one of the worst in the picture–it would have worked better as a joke (if she couldn’t perform the trick), as it seems to be at first. That they make her perfect only heightens the problem. With that said, I liked Miss Ridley’s performance and thought she did well with what little she was given to work with. Rian Johnson messed up a lot in The Last Jedi, and it’s by far the worst of the Star Wars movies I’ve seen so far, but somehow he seemed to get a better handle on her character. She responds to it by giving a better performance, too. All in all, I’m mixed on Rey, the character, but I think Daisy Ridley, the actress, gave good performances in both movies. And I still think she’s cute.
