I see it very differently than you. Brian Cox's version is so subtle that I forgot about his character immediately after his scenes ended. I agree that Brian Cox is very subtle. I just like the movie a lot. The score and cinematography get me good. This we have in common.

Robin Wright's character in 'White Oleander,' though Michelle Pfeiffer played a pretty scary character in that one as well.

To throw in a couple of extras...
Howabout a round for Large Marge of "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"
Angela Houston (who's normally 100% beautiful) tearing her hair off in "The Witches"...which probably traumatized millions of young minds.
Joan Cusack in "Addams Family Values." She was so much fun to watch in the movie, and even Christopher (Judge Doom...another one) Lloyd couldn't out-scary her.
And on Judge Doom...I wasn't a kid when "Roger Rabbit" came out, but watching that shoe get dipped hit me harder than "Old Yeller"
Also, Nurse Ratchet ("One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest")...the reason I don't go to the doctor anymore

I did have a nightmare when I was kid after watching Michael Myers. I still remember it.
I also had one after watching Jaws, but the difference is the shark in Jaws convinced me never to swim in the ocean. I know the likelihood is next to impossible but it does happen to people.

Jack Torrence really freaked me out as a kid, especially since my dad would do impressions of him.
I give special points to Billy from Black Christmas and Anton Chigurh since they had an effect when I was already older.
