CBS All Access today has announced its next original Star Trek production. Star Trek: Lower Decks will be a new half-hour animated comedy series developed by Rick and Morty writer-producer Mike McMahan. The series, which has a two-season order, will be about the support crew on "one of Starfleet’s least important ships."
A new animated Star Trek show has been rumored for months as one of the candidates in the array of possible new Trek ventures being plotted out by CBS and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who is overseeing the entire TV franchise for the streaming service. Last summer reports emerged that Kurtzman, who is the co-creator and current showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, had signed a five-year, $25 million deal with CBS Television Studios to create at least four new shows set in the Star Trek universe.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm, as well as Kurtzman's Secret Hideout production company and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz will serve as executive producers alongside McMahan. Aaron Baiers, a producer on Discovery who is said to have brought McMahan to Lower Decks, will be a co-executive producer.
“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed,” said Kurtzman of McMahan. “He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: He writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of Trek to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
McMahan promises that while Lower Decks is an animated series, "at its core, it’s undeniably Trek."
He would seem to have the geek cred to back that up. Aside from recently serving as head writer and executive producer on Rick and Morty, his Twitter account about fake Next Generation Season 8 plots got him a book deal with Simon & Schuster. He also co-created Hulu’s Solar Opposites and wrote the upcoming Short Treks episode which features the return of Rainn Wilson's Harry Mudd, "The Escape Artist."
