... are straight-up horror? I ask because it seems like most (if not all) of them mix it with comedy and/or adventure. I guess it's to make sure it's not too intense for children(?)

I thought Coraline was a good creepy movie for kids but it had some adventure aspects to it. I can't think of any straight up horror films marketed to kids. I think some kids just go see adult horror films if they're into that. Like, I know a 10-year-old girl who went to see IT, which I thought would be pretty intense for a kid her age.
