THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (1935) 4/5.
THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII is a remarkably depressing and grim RKO Radio Pictures film, set in the time of Jesus, about the fall, the rise and the eventual redemption of a man named Marcus. It was written by Ruth Rose, from a story by James Ashmore Creelman, produced by Merian C Cooper and directed by Ernest B Schoedsack and Merian C Cooper.
The film was based upon the novel, THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, however it has virtually nothing to do with the book. It stars Preston Foster, Basil Rathbone, Alan Hale, John Wood, David Holt and Dorothy Wilson. It's certainly worth a look.

Good film. Saw it on TV as an impressionable child in the 1970's. Later saw the 1960's version and the 1980's made-for-TV version. Still haven't read the book yet, unfortunately.

Good film. Saw it on TV as an impressionable child in the 1970's. Later saw the 1960's version and the 1980's made-for-TV version. Still haven't read the book yet, unfortunately. From what I understand, the book is an entirely different experience to the 1935 film.
So it would certainly be interesting to find out what those differences are.
