DR NO (1962) 4/5.
A British spy film and the first in the JAMES BOND film franchise. The screenplay is by Johanna Harwood, Richard Maibaum and Berkely Mather and is based on Ian Fleming’s 1958 novel of the same name. The memorable film soundtrack is by Monty Norman, the film is produced by Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman and it’s directed by Terence Young.
DR NO stars Sean Connery as James Bond, Jack Lord as Felix Leiter, Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder, Bernard Lee as M, Peter Burton as Major Boothroyd - AKA Q - Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny and Joseph Wiseman as Doctor Julius No. It also features Anthony Dawson, John Kitzmiller, Louis Blaazer, Zena Marshall, Yvonne Shima, Michel Mok, Dolores Keator and Eunice Gayson as Sylvia Trench.
James Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of a fellow British agent. The trail leads him to the underground base of Doctor Julius No, who is plotting to disrupt an early American space launch with a radio beam weapon. Although it’s the first of the books to be made into a film, DR NO is actually the sixth JAMES BOND novel. Despite some drastic alterations from the book, the film is still a reasonably accurate portrayal of the source material. It's a low-budget production, but it gets the film series off to a good start.

8/10. Simple and a little bit grittier than the future Connery films.

8/10. Simple and a little bit grittier than the future Connery films. And closer to the spirit of the original novel.

One of my very favorite Bonds. Indeed, offhand I can’t think of any complaints: it’s the closest to the Bond of the books, as you noted, ant-mac, and it’s fun and exciting—but we also have a smaller-scale spy story, and Bond’s human and can get hurt. We get that Bond again in From Russia with Love, and he pops up from time to time and with many different actors (George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only, Timothy Dalton in his two entries, Daniel Craig in Casino Royale), but mostly it’s just a parade of gals, gizmos, and goofiness. (Or the modern Craig formula, which [after CR] is navel-gazing and broodiness.) And Ursula Andress is by far one of the most gorgeous of all Bond girls.

I can't say that Ursula Andress would make my top 10 list of Bond girls, but she's okay.
