Horror and the piano. The Mephisto Waltz 1971, where an elderly dying concert pianist and satanist (Curd Jurgens), is hoping to switch body and souls with a younger promising concert pianist (Alan Alda). aka The Hands of Orlac 1924, with Conrad Veidt playing a world-famous pianist who loses both hands in an accident. When new hands are grafted on, he doesn't know they once belonged to a murderer. Remade as Mad Love 1935 with Peter Lorre, The Hands of Orlac 1960 with Mel Ferrer (in Spain) and Hands of a Stranger 1962 with James Noah.

I claim the weirdest submission here! Himmlerin kanteleensoittaja (2014), written and directed by Heikki Huttu-Hiltunen, is the true story of a Finnish student and kantele player walking across Europe in 1935 who met Heinrich Himmler and was commissioned by the latter to research the origins of the kantele (a sort of lyre) and help to tie the ancients Finns into the Aryan racial family. The Nazis were already eyeing Finland as a potential ally against Soviet Russia but were a bit miffed because the Finns were not deemed an Indo-European race. The kantele plays a big role in the Kalevala, the collection of Finnish origin-myths.

A Mighty Wind (2003). Typical Christopher Guest mockumentary about a one-off reunion of the fictitious folk trio the Folksmen for a memorial concert. I do not much care for folk music, but I liked both the film and their hit song. This was a spin-off from This Is Spinal Tap (1984) dir: Rob Reiner but written by Guest and Micheal McKean. The personnel of the two, totally different, bands were the same. Once, when Spinal Tap performed live in real life, the Folksmen opened for them and were booed off-stage. It is not clear if those booing realized they were booing their own heroes.

One of the best films made in Canada. I did not get the "point" of it until the end of my second viewing when my gf explained it to me. Female intuition and all that. Or maybe a greater readiness of Haitians to ascribe fate to sorcery?

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY "Montgomery Clift threw himself into the character of Prewitt, learning to play the bugle (even though he knew he'd be dubbed) and taking boxing lessons. Fred Zinnemann said, "Clift forced the other actors to be much better than they really were. That's the only way I can put it. He got performances from the other actors, he got reactions from the other actors that were totally genuine." "

Hi spiderwort.
Interesting topic, I'm picking up some recommendations as it goes. I remember seeing films about composers like 'A Song To Remember' (1945), 'Mahler' (1974) and 'Lisztomania' (1975).
John Cromwell's 'Night Song' (1947) is worth seeing, I think.
But may I recommend one of my favourite movies, Claude Sautet's 'Un Coeur En Hiver' (1992).

This man once had dreams of being a concert pianist, but he made a Detour (1945) and ended up ... well, we do not know exactly how he ended up.

THE WRONG MAN (1956)Bit'o'trivia In the opening scene, it shows Manny (Henry Fonda) playing his bass viol. Seated at the piano, next to him is the pianist/conductor who tags the final note played. This is Bernard Herrmann, the composer and conductor for many Hitchcock movies and many other Hollywood films of that era. Harry Dean Stanton's first film appearance.

The Strip (1951). Mickey Rooney as a drummer.
A Song is Born (1948) has several real musicians, including Benny Goodman as Professor Magenbruch.
