THE SCARLET CLAW (1944) 5/5.
This is the eighth film in the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series to feature Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and it also happens to be one of the stronger - if not the strongest - entries in the entire film series. What makes this all the more remarkable is the fact that it’s an entirely original story. The screenplay was by Paul Gangelin, the music was by Paul Sawtell and it was produced and directed by Roy William Neill.
THE SCARLET CLAW stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Doctor John Watson, Paul Cavanagh as Lord William Penrose, Gerald Hamer as Alistair Ramson, Arthur Hohl as Emile Journet, Kay Harding as Marie Journet and Miles Mander as Judge Brisson. It also features David Clyde, Ian Wolfe and Victoria Horne.
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson are in Canada attending a conference on the occult, when Lord William Penrose receives a message that his wife Lady Penrose has been murdered in the small village of La Mort Rouge. They are about to return to England when they receive a telegram from Lady Penrose, issued before her death, asking for help as she fears for her life. Sherlock Holmes decides to investigate her death. A very enjoyable murder mystery, with plenty of adventure and excitement.

Oh yes, THE SCARLET CLAW certainly represents the very best of the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series to feature Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
Which is all the more ironic when you consider that it's an original story.

ant-mac , did you ever finish these reviews? Not yet. But I haven't abandoned them, I've just become side-tracked lately with other pursuits.
I've seen many of these films before, I like to re-watch to get a fresh perspective before I write a film review. I fully intend to continue writing film reviews, just as soon as I get to watch some more films.
However, of late, I've been catching up on some TV shows I've been wanting to watch, I'm finally taking the opportunity to delve more deeply into the world of HP Lovecraft and, as usual, I'm spending far too much time playing GTA ONLINE.
So many interests, but so little time to enjoy them all.
