I wasn't excited enough about the plot to see it in the theater. I have an awesome Element box loaded with Kodi which is a movie fans dream device as long as you have no problem with bending the rules. I'm straight up OG so I have no qualms with tweaking the rules. I am still a bit snobbish about film quality even when I'm streaming though so I rarely watch the bootleg quality stuff and wait for the dvd versions. Hmmm would that still be considered bootleg?
Anyway here's some thoughts and questions as Rouge wraps.
What is up with Felicity Jones teeth? The front two are insanely distracting. It's like they are not just buck but they are also huge. Are they some type of really bad implants? Does she have fewer teeth than most people or are the others tiny to compensate for those gigantic cue ball sized teeth? I mean damn they are weird looking.
I did like the overall downbeatness and general lack of cute goofy wisecracking characters. The skinny robot was sort of an exception. Is it a rule that all robots in Star Wars universe have to be effete, or snarky or designed with a plush toy in mind? At least he wasn't straight up comic relief.
Speaking of the lack of comedy, is Rogue the most depressing Star Wars movie ever? It looked like the most swarthy one as well. Even the Stormtroopers were dusky. Is definitely seemed like the most diverse. There was even a gay couple (maybe) ant they were the best 2 characters even if they were just straight dudes. A Zatoichi Jedi is cool as hell. Kind of a waste though.
The diversity does kind of raise a question though. Is it good or bad that the SW movie that seemed to consciously have a cast lacking in the usual Hollywood fair haired blue eyed pretty people also killed everyone off? Or does it not matter?
The highlight of the movie for me was probably Darth Vader going all hallway Oldboy but even more lethal. It's been a while since we got to see Vader be a bad ass. Overall the action scenes were good. Nice and violent and dark.
Even though it was superfluous I liked Rogue. I might like it better if I watch it again. Then again I might like it less.
What y'all think?

Well, Disney did release the movie digitally already. However unless you paid for it, I think it's considered a bootleg. I liked that she doesn't have perfect Hollywood teeth. It makes her more relatable. Let's admit: most people in the audience watching the movie don't have perfect teeth. It's more believable most people wouldn't in the Star Wars universe either. What did you think of her character overall? The reshoots commissioned by Disney seemed to help her character the most. When I first watched the trailer, I hated her character with a passion. She came across so smug, bratty, and unlikable - especially with that, "I rebel line!" (it's no coincidence they cut that bit of dialogue out of the final cut of the movie). She still came across a little bit like that in the scene where she meet Mon Mothma. It's a fleeting moment though, so I let it slide. K-2SO (the "skinny droid") was interesting. I didn't find him very funny but some did. Regardless of this, he was memorable in some weird way for me. I guess he reminded me a bit of EV-9D from Return of the Jedi: I liked the ending. It curbed people's expectations that Disney was just going to "Disney-fy" Star Wars. It was bold to off so many characters...kind of reminds me of what would happen if George R.R. Martin wrote a Star Wars movie. A gay couple? Which two? Diversity isn't a problem for me. It's about time we get some different perspectives in Star Wars. I don't think it's a bad thing, and the most important thing, it didn't feel forced! It felt natural to the story. Overall, I liked the movie. I liked the little things added in like the blue milk on the counter in Jynn's home as a child. Like I said in another thread, they did a great job of blending in PT/OT elements into Rogue One. i.e. the Clonetrooper-like character in the one scene. I also liked they brought back unused, archived 40-year-old footage from Episode 4 of Red Leader and Gold Leader. Unfortunately, the actor who played Red Leader had died so they had to use the footage as-is. Gold Leader actor was able to return and re-record new lines for the movie. He said it was weird to watch footage of himself 40 years younger that he had never seen before in a new 2016 movie. I hear they were going to bring Wedge back but decided against it. They said that Episode 4 is the first time Wedge sees the Death Star ("Look at the size of that thing!"), so he couldn't have been involved in Rogue One. The Emperor's Royal Guards hanging out with Vader still annoys the hell of me. I know, I know, I guess it shouldn't but it does. They only go where The Emperor is! They don't guard anyone else. That, for me, is a major drop in Star Wars continuity.

I dug it but I've only seen it once. Will probably rent it next week, and, if I'm going to add to my collection, I'll wait for the Collector's Edition at the end of the year....

I'm definitely going to steal that line.
I agree with you about Felicity Jones looking like a regular person but her teeth were distracting as hell for about half the movie. I can't imagine what it was like on the big screen or IMAX. Yikes. I did get over it eventually though. I agree with your comment about how off-putting she seemed in the trailer. That's one of the main reasons I waited so long to watch the movie. She was much better in the final version and I had no idea they reshot scenes. I wonder what else was cut out?
I did like K-250. At least his wit was dry and the "comedy" was restrained. I'm sure lots of people were like you and didn't notice or just ignored it. I was even surprisingly moved by his final scene. Just found out he was voiced by Alan Tudyk aka Wash & Tucker. Now I feel even sadder about his eyes going dark.
I liked the diversity. It was very organic and it never felt like the cast was swarthy just so Disney execs could pat each other on the back. Maybe I read Chirrut and Baze's relationship wrong. Perhaps they were just good friends. It doesn't matter either way. Chirrut was the coolest character.
I have to admit I didn't even think about the Royal Guard being with Vader. I was just happy we got to see him kick ass.

Wow. Great post shinnickneth. I'm definitely going to steal that line.
Thank you. Help yourself. Yes, word has it Disney was very unhappy with the first cut of movie. This rumor is backed up by the fact that after Bob Iger watched it, he didn't say anything good about it to the media - unlike Episodes 7 and 8 that he praised after he viewed them. Disney brought in a new writer and director to do the reshoots for the movies. It cost Disney a pretty penny raging an upwards of $1 million dollars. The only comment Disney made about the reshoots was that they were "Working on the overall tone of the movie", which is complete BS when you bring in new talent to work on it...otherwise, why not just use the people you already have? Disney also took Final Cut away from the original director. The moves paid off though for they were able to make their main characters more likable and redeem the movie. There's a lot that got cut. If you watch the early trailers and pictures that were released, you'll see that they altered/changed a lot to the final product. This has been supported by statements by the cast who said that Disney has so much leftover footage from production that they literally could have gone with many different endings/tones/storylines/etc. In terms of stuff cut (off the top of my head): there was some lines by Mon Monthma about Jyn Erso's history, a shot of Jyn punching a Stormtrooper with her fist, a monologue by Forest Whitaker's character, more footage of Forest's character with a shaved head set in the days when Jyn is a little girl (his character seemed to reduced the most by my estimation), and the one that seems to have people the most pissy online at least...a shot of Stormtroopers standing ankle deep in beach water. Oh, there was also more footage/pictures from scenes with this particular character that sadly didn't make the cut: Yeah, I didn't get that they were romantically involved at all. They just seemed like old friends. I agree with you on Chirrut. Donnie Yen who played him was one of the few attractive elements that made me decide to give the movie a chance (despite the trailers). I thought, "Well, the lead is unlikable but at least Donnie Yen is in it." I'm a fan of his work from the martial arts franchise, Ip Man. It was a "pleasant" surprise. I didn't find the scene so remarkable for the action itself, but how the filmmakers made me feel the desperation of the Rebel soldiers trying to delay/stop Vader from acquiring the Death Star plans back. The scene felt so natural to me that I would believe it's exactly how George Lucas envisioned the moments before Episode 4 when he was making the movie 40 years ago. I'll admit, the moment with young Princess Leia made me choke up - more so to do with how young Carrie Fisher was when she passed away. It's still sad she's not with us anymore.

The Emperor's Royal Guards hanging out with Vader still annoys the hell of me. I know, I know, I guess it shouldn't but it does. Of all the "inconsistencies" that people whine about with this film, this is the only one that really bothers me. Those guards shouldn't be there. Overall, it was a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend reading the book Catalyst and the novelization of this film as well. It's a cool addition to the lore.

Yeah, even in Episode 1 when Palpatine's guards are blue, they still only go where he goes. It's shown that way throughout the franchise for a reason. Even the old toys from way back when referred to them as, "The Emperor's Royal Guards." They don't hang out with Vader or Tarkin or anyone else. Here's the evidence from Episode 1. I had to screen capture from my computer and upload since there weren't any nice copies of the scene online. It won't paste into here because the links are so new: s27.postimg.org/h7wc6zyz7/royal1.pngs30.postimg.org/874t7czrl/royal2.pngThen of course there's the scenes from Return of the Jedi:

The Emperor acts so smug in Return of the Jedi that he has Vader wrapped around his finger. When Vader eventually throws him to his death, he didn't see it coming at all. I think having him suspect Vader's treachery (for even in Revenge of the Sith Anakin offers for Padme/Obi-Wan to overthrow the Emperor and rule together) wouldn't be consistent with the narrative in the OT. hmmmm I wonder if the director for Rogue One has ever addressed this issue. I would be interested in hearing his take on it. I would be interested to hear him defend their inclusion in the movie because it thoroughly confused me. I expected The Emperor to be revealed in that scene due to the Royal Guards - not Vader.

Even though I've seen every SW movie, I consider myself more of a casual fan compared to guys like y'all and some of my friends. By that I mean I've never read any of the books other than the original novelization and Splinter of the Minds Eye. Even a lot of the Canon stuff I forget. I was going to suggest they had the Royal Guards in that scene because those red uniforms really pop and contrast Vaders black in a way that looks cool. However, they had to realize that a LOT of fans would have a problem with the scene so why include them?
I'm a big Donnie Yen fan as well from when a lot of Asian movies were finally getting released in the US on dvd. Stuff like Iron Monkey, Dragon's Inn, Once Upon a time in China 2, and Legend of the Wolf. It sucks he won't be in other SW movies.

Sadly, I think that's all it came down: it "Looks so, so, so cool! Let's put them in the scene!" I do like visuals (Star Wars is full of them) but it's also important to me that everything compliments each other in terms of continuity. The moment with the Royal Guards took me out of the movie. It would be like seeing Luke Skywalker in Episode 7 being guarded on that island with several Gamorrean guards...Does not compute! Does not compute! At least we got him for one movie, right? He said at one point that he almost turned the role down. Fortunately, he had a change of mind and Rogue One is definitely a better movie for it.

this movie didn't need to be made, Felicity Jones was wooden, the movie is too long, but I still enjoyed it, perhaps more than any other Star Wars movie.
