One of the things that’s on my to-do list right now is to watch the Star Wars sequels. I was going to say it takes me a long time to see these movies, but then I realized that I’ve seen all of the Lucas-helmed ones for the first time in this same year! (It was all for the best: this has been a miserable year for me for reasons I won’t go into, so fun, swashbuckling fantasies set in space have been great mood-boosters! ) Anyway, personal bellyaching aside, @forceghostackbar asked me an interesting question a while back, and I was wondering what you all would think about it, whether you liked the sequels or not. So here’s my question: It’s 2013-14. Disney is producing its first Star Wars film. They turn to you to write the script. The real movie had a budget of $300 mil., so that’s what you’ve got to play around with. What do you do? What decisions do you make? When I was planning my concepts out for the good Mr. Ackbar, something that really stuck in my mind was “…holding off till 2015, when Disney made its first sequel, intrinsically limits the range of options we have with the story ”—for a number of reasons, but mostly just because everyone’s much older. So how would you write the script? Just some general ideas are fine—if you want to write bullets for a small outline, that’s fine too, but definitely not necessary. By the way, if anyone’s interested, my own concepts are here.

I'd give $10 million to 30 talented film makers to produce original movies - even if only 3 of them turned out to be excellent it would be more satisfying than churning out one cgi laden P.O.S.
Sorry, I just don't like Star Wars much, and the word "franchise" when applied to movies and sports teams makes me want to vomit.

ok … more than "a tad" … Ah! Hate to seem too goody-two-shoes, but my lottery plans have always involved paying off the bills, helping my family out, and giving to charity. Rather boring—but, on the other hand, I don’t buy lottery tickets, so I couldn’t execute those boring plans anyway!

No disrespect, Aussie, but that seems a rather visceral reaction to an OP that was (I think; correct me if I'm wrong) inoffensive.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful to you, so sorry for any offence. I guess my emotional response went overboard.

The three Jedi confront Darth Plagueis, who reveals that he has been behind everything, from the beginning:
"It was I who trained Darth Sidious... It was I who allowed the Empire to rise... And it was I who influenced the Midichlorians to create The Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker."
Jake and Julia cannot handle Plagueis. Luke sacrifices himself, as his own father did, and wipes out the Sith, forever.

Many may note that I'm keeping some of the main ideas that were used in the actual movie...
Episode 7: The Lost Skywalker...
-Female protagonist, daughter of Luke, a mostly trained Jedi living in hiding -Luke as a "Fisher King" archetype that is missing and needs to be "activated" -Han completely estranged from Leia, living on a remote planet. An old grizzled gunslinger type. -A fully formed New Republic with ACKBAR AS PRESIDENT! -Han and Leia's twin son and daughter as the villains -No Stormtroopers. No Resistence. No new Empire/Order -Lots of familiar ships: X Wings, Tie Fighters, ECT. But also lots of new ones too. -Practical FX over CGI! And lots of REAL locations.
The plot would revolve around finding Luke. He would be the macguffin. No new Death Stars. The villains would also be former students of Luke that turned to the Dark Side. Not sure what their angle could be though. I'd have to give this more thought. Act Three would be very Indiana Jonesy, with Luke being found and then doing something extraordinary using the Force that halts the villain's evil plans.

The film ends with Luke leading a huge rally of Republic soldiers, giving a rousing speech vowing to track them down those responsible. Would this be the same Tarkin, President Ackbar, or a family-member? Because I loved the character and was disappointed he got killed off in the first one–though that may just be because I like Peter Cushing in everything. Charles Dance would be a good fit for the part. (I remember it made the news a few years back that one of the sequels made a CGI Peter Cushing for Grand Moff Tarkin, the very idea of which creeps me out.) Killing Han and Leia off so early would be a gutsy move; it’d definitely annoy a lot of people, but it might differentiate the sequel series from its predecessors. Starting the movie off with a surprise attack is an excellent idea. I think I’d leave Han alive, as what @forceghostackbar called “an old grizzled gunslinger type”–I like that characterization. I can’t see him and Leia staying together and settling down into domestic life! I’d have the New Republic squabbling like the old one did, with a reactionary party in the Congress/Parliament/Senate/whathaveyou. It wouldn’t actively call for a restoration of the Empire, and its members wouldn’t necessarily be evil, but they miss the order and stability of the Empire and want that to return under the Republic. Leia would be trying to keep things together. For Han, as I mentioned in my original concept, I’d have him like Old Indy in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, telling these old war stories to kids. Wonderful ideas, guys.

My intention was that it was his son, seeking revenge. Cheesy, I know.

I’ve now seen two of the sequels and can confidently say I prefer all of our concepts to the actual movies.
