Was it a work (planned before hand by all parties) or was it a shoot (Vince/Shawn screwing Hart out of the belt)?

Didn't Brett Hart show up the next night on Nitro?
Supposedly Bret punched Vince backstage and left him with a shiner.

You see in the "Wrestling With Shadows" doc that was following Bret Hart around at the time it captures Vince leaving his office with a black eye and disheveled. Bret even said he punched him. In terms of showing up on Nitro the next night, no. He officially debuted in WCW on December 15th, 1997. Survivor Series was on November 9, 1997. So he didn't show up another month. Idk if there was something contract wise preventing him from showing up or what. But for whatever reason he didn't show up for a month.

@screamingtreefrogs , I believe yu have a theory on this question. A definite 'work' all planned out by Hart and McMahon to benefit everybody involved. McMahon wanted out of Hart's contract. What ensued: Hart collects a $9 mil contract in WCW McMahon becomes 'Evil McMahon' feuding with Austin All set up for Hart to one day eventually return after his WCW contract ran out so they can run a storyline off the previous years happenings. And what a shocker - he did return! It's just a shame 'life' got in the way - i.e. Hart's career ending concussion and deaths in his family - which technically lead to the end of his in ring career and bitterness that ensued. The storyline didn't play out as planned - however it did in a sense play out with Hart vs. McMahon at 'Mania

I believe it was real. After all this time someone would have spilled the beans.
It's too ridiculous not to be real. A fake, scripted shoot would have been more smooth. This was overly complicated.

These are carny workers. There's no bigger carny workers in the business than Hart and McMahon - they actually live this stuff. It was 'taboo' in the old days to state wrestling was fake. Wrestlers over the years have even come out and spoken on it. This was the biggest work in sports entertainment history. These are guys behind the scenes saying it........

For it to be real, the echo would've had to have been a whole lot smoother. Like a ton more. As it was, Vince didn't know exactly what to say or how to respond. Bret was angry & on his road to being shunned by Hogan & Bischoff. Bret wasn't even welcomed back to WWE for years & years yes? It's like the moon landing conspiracies. If there was even a breath of faking the Apollo missions, the Soviet Union would've been all over it & won the space race going away.
As a fan, I think it funny & a bit bizarre that the fictional soap opera that is pro wrestling, the title belts are still treated like winner's property? lols Vince was afraid of Bret walking onto Nitro with WWE's #1 most prestigious belt. That's kinda absurd, it's a f'n McGuffin no? Why can't Vince just say f that noyse, you can win in Montreal, you're just not getting the belt to close the show. Scott Hall never won a world title, & he says he really doesn't care because it's just a f'n inanimate object. His heat & career were light years hotter than fleeting title reigns.

Think of it like an Academy Award. Yes, it's just handed to you, but it does come with a level of prestige and a sense of pride. You have to keep in mind how different things were back then when it came to the title. It wasn't just an inanimate object. It was a symbol the company thinks you're the top at your job. And that they're willing to gamble on you being able to carry the company and put more butts in seats and therefore get a much bigger pay check.
Hall may not have been a "world" champion, but the guy carried around the Intercontinental title four times in the WWF and the tag titles on multiple occasions in WCW. Even he understands the importance of being seen as a champion.

I tend to take Bret Hart by his word, as he has been brutally honest on so many other aspects of his career.
On top of that, there really isn't any reason for them to still hide the truth after all these years, if it really was a work.

We've all seen how much Vince loves to brag about his victory over WCW. If it had been a work, this would've come to light the second WCW folded. It'd've been on dvds and retrospectives.
