sUpon seeing the trailer of Instant family, I thought it would be much more of a comedy. Not really the new Neighbors, but closer to it (Or Daddys Home, by the same director) rather than a bitterweet tale about the challenges of adoption. Its a nice (however not too original) story about a couple adopting children. Well acted by Rose Byrne and Marc Wahlberg and all the kids. But the real stand outs are Margot Matingale, (who is SUCH a scene stealer) and a surprise cameo of Joan Cusack. I wonder how and why she got the role. I mean it literally could have been anybody. I KNOW she does a lot of these, but it was still a surprise. She was there for less than two minutes in a role that A) didnt have to be there, and B) certainly didnt hacve to be played by her. Not complaining though as I love to see her on screen. Just wondering why she did it. Friendship with Tig Notaro or someone from the production? Or just simply in love with the script? Thats hard to believe though because to me this was such a generic story. Lets adopt kids, no its too hard, lets do it anyway, kids are great, oh wait, they resent us, do they really, shoud we give them up oh no now we love them too much. Do they love us? Phew, they doo. Oh wait, Mr Google helped me out. So here is how Joan ended up in that role. Long story short, the director believes in big laughs for even the smallest scenes, was inspired by John Hughes and his casting director recommended Cusack for this tiny role that had to provide a much needed comedy interjection into an otherwise very emotional moment. Its not a laughing out loud flick by any means, I think I laughed once and chuckled a few times, it felt a bit heavy handed at times BUT I think it talks about an important topic and does it well. Plus it has some really good actors in the smaller parts... so overall its worth seeing 7/10 from me. Just dont go in expecting a silly comedy.

The new Neighbors? Isn't this a family picture?

In INSTANT FAMILY (about a couple who want to adopt 3 siblings), the comedy is ad-libbed and it's added to otherwise serious situations. Oh, not as a tool to solve a problem (as it happens in real life); They just add barely-related things to the conversation and the movie still has the never to pretend like it's teaching people how to be parents. Not to mention that the jokes themselves aren't very funny and they don't mix well with the scenes that are trying to be dramatic (which by the way do work, thanks mostly to Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne and Isabela Moner's performances). Also, if you want to make comedy out of sensitive topics to avoid political correctness, do it right. JUAN (the middle son) gets scared everytime the parents do a sudden movement, because he's traumatized. They tell him everything will be OK, but he's still the center of some physical gags. It's not done with irony, social commentary, comedic subversion... Hell, it's not even the main focus of the scenes in which they happen. It's just... tasteless. PETE & ELLIE (the foster parents) are the ones who almost cross the line with certain things they say to each other in regards to the adoption, even though LIZZIE (the oldest daughter) is meant to be the unlikeable one that eventually grows. Speaking of, she doesn't earn that. Not just because the way she smiles non-stop during the last couple of minutes feels forced, but because at times she acts very down-to-earth and even maternal. Even for an angsty teenager, she should've known better, so I couldn't root for her. Is SANDY (PETE's mother) unlikeable too? Not quite; just annoying as fuck. Why didn't LIZZIE yell at PETE & ELLIE for getting JACOB (the good-looking 22-year-old school janitor (that description seems paradoxical)) arrested for sexting with her? Before doing that, they told her that it's wrong to take naked selfies, but they made it sound like a self-esteem issue rather than a legal issue (she's 15). In fact, they act so incompetently during the 1st half of the movie (when it comes to parenting, some things are common sense) that I doubt they would've done a better job with biological children. 4/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I honestly dont think it was supposed to be a comedy, it was just very mismarketed. Perhaps for its own good? And it is a self esteem issue (for her - and legal for him)
