Maybe your just sensitive to that type of stuff where as most people are not(?) It's not that difficult to hear the difference with a good pair of headphones. Maybe most people are content with their smartphone speakers, bluetooth cubes, and cheap earbuds. If it weren't for the phasing of joint stereo, I wouldn't really care given that lossy files are only a matter of convenience for me; they're just portable (and disposable) copies of the originals which I refuse to scrap.

Google Earth - Looking at stuff and things
QGIS - Free GIS software for map making and data analysis. VERY good, especially with the new updated
R - Statistical programming language. Used mostly for making plots, and running linear regressions/PCA's on data
Inkscape - Vector graphic software for making figures
Gimp - Light photo editing...I don't know it as well as I would like to.
Blender - Just started trying to learn it.

(THE american release have syndication edits) I used to live in a Germany back in the late 80s - early 90s and not too far from a very small town called "Alfdorf". The signs marking entry just outside of town limits constantly got replaced because stupid American GIs kept stealing them. These signs were not small.
