Power imbalance. It's like when a kid can't say "no" to daddy. How do you tell god "no"? That's what I've often wondered:
Mary: No thank you, I don't want to be impregnated
God: Too bad bitch! *magically impregnates her, smoke's cigarette* See ya next time, baby!

This is the kind of thing that might, scary as it would be, get Trump elected again.

The pastor who responded does damage to his own side when he says, "a sovereign God doesn’t need ‘consent’ from any of us for anything He chooses to do.” In effect, he concedes the academic's point, and offers a defense of "So what?"

Yep. And, not surprisingly, no one here who seems to be critical of his critique can mount a convincing reason to think he's wrong. "Because historically gods have always behaved this way" is not a defense.

Just another liberal talking crap about God *roles eyes*. If he's "talking crap", then please debunk his arguments. It will be hilarious watching you try.

Did not consent when she clearly did consent?! Why do all you leftists seem to be such inconsistent hypocritical deranged illogical fucking idiots? Is there a special school y’all go to?

Sexual assault when there was no sex involved?! Impregnating someone, even through magic, is arguably a form of sex, shit for brains. I'm not up on my Middle-Eastern fairy tale reading. Can you quote the parts in the Bible where Yahweh and Mary had a discussion about this and she said, "Sure, knock me up?" Even if such a passage exists, consent between a poor teenage girl with no power and a genocidal, maniacal superbeing who has a history of killing out of spite is not real consent, shit for brains. Why do you fundamentalist Christians and Muslims seem to be such knuckle-dragging idiots when it comes to morality. Is there a special school y'all go to?

faustus5LOL Luke 1:26-38 “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.”

If that professor read Luke 1, he would know that Mary consented to the Holy Spirit impregnating her.

"Because historically gods have always behaved this way" is not a defense. Jesus Christ... Maybe because people are tired of pointing out that Mary gives consent in the damned story over and over to morons who are apparently too lazy to read it before they comment. We just had, yet again, a thread about this asinine argument.

Power imbalance. It's like when a kid can't say "no" to daddy. How do you tell god "no"? This is the closest thing to this argument that has any merit worthy of being discussed. Yes... There is a power imbalance.... but: It's not a nullifying argument. Parents are allowed ask things of their children. Bosses are still allowed to ask for favors from underlings. At no point in the story, is Mary threatened with repercussions if she refuses.

But your examples don't nullify the premise . Parents and bosses are not allowed to ask for sex.At no point in the story does God ask for sex.

At no point in the story does God ask for sex. Irrelevant as Him and Mary didn't share a cigarette afterwards either. That makes no fucking sense... Of course they didn't... The "cigarette" thing is a reference to sex... and since they didn't have sex... Your "irrelevant" is irrelevant.. and just kind of redundant. Yeah... It kinda actually is... She asks how she's gonna get preggers... and the angel explains that holy spirit will pass over her and... MAGIC!! Now... unless you see where there's an implication of God ramming her with 8 octopus like tentacles or anything less hentai-ish... Sex isn't the way it is said to happen.
Those are just examples of power imbalances.... AND: It's your comparison to parents, moron.

Oh jeezus christ in regards to the cigarette: What a humorless git. But tell us how you know all the details of immaculate conception, jughead? I've never heard any theologian pretentious enough to claim he knows. 1) Jesus Christ... at least be at least a little funny before you start throwing around the "humorless"es.... 2) Not making my own shit up isn't "knowing all the details"... It just reading the story and not making shit up. Just sticking to the details of the story isn't pretentious... Demanding that your made up shit be treated as a valid reality is.
