I have book called The Golden Turkey Awards published decades ago that had this as the worst film ever made. There is a lot of competition at the bottom, but is this really dead last? It certainly has had a cult following or sorts for a long time.

It certainly has had a cult following or sorts for a long time. That Golden Turkey book at least helped revive the career of Ed Wood, or rather his reputation, and he's still got fans. I like Wood for mostly Camp reasons, and Plan 9 is up there, though I have fond memories of watching Bride Of The Monster as a kid and really liking it. All that aside, I consider Plan 9 a fun so bad it's good movie, the badness of which is so off the charts as to make it play at times like a masterpiece of its genre. By no means is it the worst movie of all time, or even horrible. Director Wood was a far cry from Orson Welles,--he was a far cry from William Beaudine!--but his brought energy and enthusiasm to his work, and there's an unintentional (I think ) surrealism to his films that I find endearing and somewhat child-like. Plan 9 is, for me, a joy, and not even a guilty pleasure.

Well, Ed Wood did also inspire a film about him with a great performance by Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi.

So love this movie. I often use the line, "I'm being muzzled by Army brass" when I don't feel like explaining myself.

I just stumbled through this thread again, Geode, and gotta share: even my father knew the name William Beaudine! He was a legend in his time in that apparently movie audiences in (I'm guessing mostly neighborhood theaters) would collectively groan if they saw Beaudine's name as director of a second feature. There are stories about Beaudine, two of which I recall. The first is that he directed so many B pictures that he had to resort to aliases so that people wouldn't think he was literally directing a movie a day! Second one is that in the middle of editing a routine B western in the Thirties Beaudine looked at his assistant with a puzzled expression on his face and asked the question "is there actually somebody out there waiting to see this?".

I love Plan 9 from Outer Space! I recorded it off of tv on vhs years ago and we would watch it over an over and laugh hysterically. I don't have the vhs anymore but I do have the Rifftrax version on DVD. The phrase "so bad it's good" was invented for this movie.

Gregory Walcott must have been hard up. Hated the script but still did it.

I don't get the people who say it's so bad it's good. I honestly never really got a laugh from watching it. It's just an indy movie from the '50s that some guy hated on. I seen a lot worse with bigger budgets.

What a great book. I bought it when I was a kid and still have a copy. It makes a great companion to Cult Movies Vol. 1, 2 and 3 and The Psychotronic Film books in any movie fans library.

It certainly has had a cult following or sorts for a long time. Its certainly close to dead last, but i think that honor really goes to The Beast Of Yucca Flats(1961)--Plan 9 tho is in the so bad its good genre, its enjoyable

I also bought the Golden Turkey Awards book and couldn't wait to see Plan 9 From Outer Space. Supposedly, the movie was a "laugh riot," according to the authors. So terrifically inept, it reached new heights of hilarious absurdity. Then, I saw it.
Plan 9 From Outer Space is inept, yes, but it's far from being hilarious. It's not even funny. Not in the slightest. In fact, I'd say it's painful to watch and sit through, and I've done it only once. I'm sure I'll regret those minutes spent when I'm on my deathbed. Just horrible.
So, I wouldn't recommend Plan 9 From Outer Space, if you're looking to laugh at the idiocy of a so-called filmmaker like Ed Wood. There's just no humor there, not even in the cheap sets and chintzy effects. I'd rather have my teeth drilled.

Bump to get something ahead a the ridiculous "So" thread.
