Beethoven was christened on December 17, 1770 so we celebrate his birthday (248 years ago) on the 16th.
For his Birthday selection, I have picked the final minutes of “Fidelio,” the Master’s only opera. The story so far: Leonora, disguised as the title young man, has saved her husband from execution at the last second in a prison for political prisoners. The Enlightened Ruler has arrived to set all the prisoners free and reunite them with their families. As the clip begins, Leonora is handed the key to her husband’s shackles. Then everybody sings her praises. Enlightenment principles and married love triumph. Enjoy.
Please share your thoughts on Beethoven, the first work you ever heard from him, your favorites from him, or anything else that comes to mind.

He's the big dog.
Do more people still prefer him OR do they prefer Mozart because of the 80s film on him (Mozart).

I think most people start with Beethoven's symphonies. Has any composer written a more diverse set of symphonies than Beethoven? I think not. He developed the symphony by leaps and bounds.

As a child, I think the first time I heard Beethoven's 7th Symphony - 2nd movement was, when they played it at the end of the strange movie "Zardoz": As best as I can remember, the 7th - final movement - was my first Beethoven. It was one of Leonard Berstein's Young People's Concerts on early TV. The swirling rhythms of the first theme made me dizzy. Never forget it.

I admire Beethoven more than love him, with one significant exception: his sixth symphony (the Pastorale). That piece moves me to tears--happy ones--perhaps because I can hear how much he loved his subject. The joy he felt in and about his beloved countryside shines in every note. Oh, and anybody who thinks Beethoven had no sense of humor has obviously never listened to "Rage Over the Lost Penny."
