A friend just posted on Facebook how much better he liked this feature than the Universal serials with Buster Crabbe. I am just the reverse. I think in a large part this is due to the feature being played as "camp" and although the serials come off as such they were played straight.
Having Queen score the thing made it more campy.

I liked the movie when I finally watched it, but the worst thing about it are the leads for Flash and Dale--deliberately cast for an airhead quality so as to convey a mocking attitude towards the material. A serious effort would have been more enduring.

I wonder what it would gave turned out like if George Lucas had had gotten the rights and done it? Ahhh I think it would have been very close to Star Wars in some things. Flash Gordon would have been like Luke, unsure of himself. Dale Arden would have been a wisecracker like Leia. Or at least a Cindy Williams type (since that is who Lucas said he originally wanted for Princess Leia, a younger Cindy Williams).
Some of the costume designs were inspired by Flash Gordon comic strips, although after watching the 1950s FOX Prince Valiant, I think Lucas and FOX decided to just remake Prince Valiant with a space theme. The singing sword became the light saber.
James Mason's Black Knight IS Darth Vader.
Sterling Hayden has the Harrison Ford role with a little Obi Wan thrown in.

I'm more interested in how it would have looked if Nic Roeg had directed as initially intended.

Pretty damned silly but that was the intention. Music is still awesome. A remake would be interesting. I read a crossover comic where Gordon teams up with Mandrake the Magician, the Phantom, and Jungle Jim to fight a now evil Dale Arden (who was basically corrupted by Ming the Merciless then took over his empire).

I hated the music except the symphonic bits. If Star Wars had used Queen....egads...
I am not surprised Flash would fail to protect Dale or require a coalition of the willing in a modern comics interpretation.
I guess Prince Valiant is a neurotic seeking father atonement these days.

I don't really favor a remake. I prefer to just treasure the original serials.
