Had it been previously established in Doctor Who lore that the Daleks are symbiotic creatures with machine AND biological parts? If so, had the shape of the biological being (some sort of octopus-like creature) ever been mentioned before?

I am a sort of casual Doctor Who viewer who only started watching when Matt Smith took over and I am not sure I knew that the Daleks were partially organic.
