"Gacy" took quite a few liberties. I didn't hate it. Haven't seen "To catch a killer". But I did enjoy the book and movie "Dear Mr. Gacy".

To Catch a Killer is one of the better true-crime telefilms out there, low-keyed and disturbing. Gacy is more OTT, and suffers from the extremely low budget (trying to make L.A. stand in for Des Plaines, Illinois is not a good idea, to give one example of how shoestring production values hurt the film). Brian Dennehy is really chilling in TCaK, and he's matched by Michael Riley's subtle performance as the detective whose persistence in bringing Gacy to justice finally paid off. Mark Holton, OTH, looks the part, but just doesn't generate the sense of menace that Dennehy projected; a real case of a made-for-tv production outclassing a theatrical film.
