Sister Mary Lazarus: " Those Were Nuns!" The SISTER ACT Films Discussion Thread Featuring: Whoopi Goldberg... as Deloris... a Reno Nevada lounge singer, who pretends to be a Nun named 'Sister Mary Clarence'. Also starring: Maggie Smith as Reverend Mother Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick Wendy Makkena as Sister Mary Robert Mary Wickes as Sister Mary Lazarus "Sister Act" (1992)When Deloris witnesses her mob boss boyfriend kill a man, and he puts her on his hit list... she is put under protective custody in a San Francisco convent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_Act"Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (1993)Deloris' friends ask her to once again pretend to be a nun, and help teach music, at St. Francis Academy in San Francisco... a community school which is facing closure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_Act_2:_Back_in_the_HabitDISCUSS I think the first film was better than the second, but I did enjoy both films... and I thought Whoopi Goldberg was fantastic as Deloris/'Sister Mary Clarence'. I liked most of the early rock music song, that had the altered the lyrics, so they could sing to the "lord". I laughed at her reactions to how bad the original choir was, in the first film. My favorite scene in the second film, was when the class taught Deloris about "Fusion", and she had trouble getting help, because the school floor wasn't level... " Ohh, MAAN!" Having grown up as a military brat and moving around alot as a kid... I felt myself identifying with Maria, in SA2, when she didn't know the words to the song "Mary Had A Little Lamb"... There were several times, when I felt left out at my new schools, when other kids would start talking about things I hadn't been exposed to yet. And yes, I was made fun of too...

The first one was good fun. Didn't like the second one mainly coz of all the annoying teenagers.

MCDemuthMUCH preferred #1. Funny and original the first time. The 2nd too forced and not more than a "let's try again" . If you like character actor Jim Beaver (best known from Supernatural and That HBO western with all the swearing whose title I cannot recall just now...he played Ellsworth in that one ) watch for him as one of the detectives. Gotta look fast. He isn't in it very much.

Oh wow, I haven't seen them since they came out in those respective years!
I have to agree, the first one is a classic, but the sequel was an utter disappointment. I guess the only redeeming factor for SA2 was seeing a young Jennifer Love Hewitt. She was so adorable back then. Other than that, I have to agree with misstique; the teenagers were annoying as hell, and it bombed at the box office.
I suppose this is why there was no third film to make it a trilogy.

I still have vague recollections of seeing this in the theatre, but have watched it numerous times it’s been on TV (and also had a second-hand VHS copy of it that we got cheap from the video store).
The first movie is still so enjoyable, even today. It’s funny, but there’s also a lot of ‘heart’ to it as well. Whoopi Goldberg is just so much fun as Deloris/Sister Mary Clarence, and Maggie Smith totally sells her character’s change of opinion regarding Deloris towards the end of the film.
I liked the different dynamics Deloris had with the different nuns. I appreciated how Deloris was able to appeal to each Sister and offer constructive criticism without insulting them/putting them down. She was able to convince Sister Mary Patrick to take it down a notch with her “powerful instrument”; she knew how to get on the ‘good’ side of Sister Mary Lazarus (after at first getting on her ‘bad’ side when she thought Deloris was purposely replacing her), and I think my favourite friendship Deloris formed was the one with Sister Mary Robert.
Out of all the songs that the choir performed after Deloris had helped teach them to sing, I liked the first and last songs the best. Everyone’s reactions to the choir’s horrible singing early in the film still amuse me.
I thought Harvey Keitel was a decent enough villain and Bill Nunn was likeable as Eddie Souther.
Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit was definitely disappointing in comparison to the first, though there were a few 'good' moments sprinkled throughout (such as the bit with the chair already mentioned) and I particularly liked Deloris's part in this clip:

Didn't care for them that much, except for Maggie Smith as the Mother superior, my sympathies were entirely with her. the sequel I thought ridiculous! how can she pretend to be a nun again when she's supposed to have become so famous?
