I remember there were big screen remakes of Gunsmoke and Big Valley planned but the writers strike and 2009 recession killed both

Probably not given the lousy Lone Ranger of recent time. Both Gunsmoke and Bonanza had a few decent TV Movies. Rifleman was once on the track for a movie remake until Johnny Depp pooped his pants.

Yeah The Lone Ranger probably killed off any future western themed blockbusters for a while. Fucking Johnny Depp.

You know what I'll take some of the heat off of Depp. He might have put the coffin in the grave but I think the final nail was the under-performance by that remake of The Magnificent Seven which had a pretty impressive cast and wasn't all that bad. I can't really think why audiences are just more interested in seeing a western like with True Grit or Django Unchained or The Revenant more so compared to other recent ones.
