first of all, fair warning, i am old lol, i am 49, same age as Matthew McConaughey, and lucky for me, i also look like him
so anyway i was 7 when STAR WARS came out , you will notice i only call it by that name, and only in all caps, because that's what it was called back then, and that's how it was written then, i refuse to call it a new hope , that was not its name!
word got around there was a cool fun movie, esp for kids to watch, and once we saw it we kept wanting to go back so i saw it three times that summer
on tv local news, which was all we had, they would show theaters in LA with people lined up out the door into the street and around the block, i never saw that again until batman '89
its difficult to say how impressed we were, from the opening scene, when the "imperial cruiser" came into view over our heads, it was mind blowing, and it is something i will never ever forget
we had never seen anything like it, there was no media or toys, so we would go to school and draw pictures of darth vader, death star, etc. as close as we could from memory
so eventually we had to get all the stuff, action figures, ships, death star, pajamas, sheets blankets, pillows, beach towels, wristwatch, halloween costumes ( Vader )
i can't even describe to you what a big deal it was, take all the hype of a trailer release ( like today for spiderman FFH ) and basically drag it out and extend it for three years
the film actually stayed in theaters for over a full year!
we would pretend to be STAR WARS characters after school, but no costumes no guns no swords no nuthin, i was always darth vader!
the movie for its time was super fun and super fast paced ( now every blockbuster is even faster and crazier, making SW look tame )
so then it seeped into every aspect of culture right? it was on the cover of time, people, rolling stone, i'm sure you heard they even forced George to make a TV special!
the build up to "SW II" was much bigger ( the first film had caught everyone by surprise ) so what you saw was yoda on the cover of people magazine and it would say "move over R2, there's a new cute character on the way!"
so my friends says after school "i saw STAR WARS! vader is luke's dad!" i hadn't seen it yet , so i didn't even believe him! lol
then pictures of RotJ leaked and we actually thought that was the old death star with a huge chunk blown out of it by the explosion!
everything got bigger and better, you will notice the tie fighter groups in RotJ are huge and numerous, walkers on endor, you name it!
my little brother was 6 when RotJ came out, so he was getting the toys, too. we ended up with tons of figures and ships from all three films
then when i was 25 ( in 1995 ) they sort of randomly released new figures and re-released the old ships, AND I BOUGHT THEM ALL! i have hundreds of figures and dozens of ships, i used to have them all on display, in a second bedroom on multiple bookshelves ( they are now packed away in the basement )
so yeah, i'm a super fan and i am nuts! lmao
forgot to mention, raiders of the lost ark was just as big of a deal, it also showed for a full year, i loved it just as much, to this day SW and raiders are by far my two all time favorite movies, nothing else comes close ( on coldens site i rated them at 12/10 and 11/10 )
there weren't too many raiders toys, my brother had a few figures, my friend had a real hat and a real whip that we used as toys!!!
also look up a film called excalibur, you will love it, it was a little bit more adult and under the radar ( we actually saw it on cable ) but we played that too, using wiffle bats as swords and trash can lids as shields! no joke!
in 86 i started driving, 87 started drinking, 88 started messing with girls
so that was the end of my movie loving childhood, for a while at least
