"Haven't you got anything better to do than hanging around like a coyote in heat?"
mostly hilarious action adventure modern western set across various american small towns. man, CLINT did a great service to fans of american cinema by making films like this and EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE. his was the final stand before the tech yuppies and marvel nerds took over the mantle from the cowboys in the movies.
bronco billy and his group of traveling performers run into snooty heiress (the always beautiful nymph like SONDRA LOCKE) who is "as cold as a fish". some of them think she has brought bad luck with her. but bronco is in love with her and he goes out of his way to reform the spoiled rich brat.
the film has one of the funniest botched bank robberies of all time. the whole film seems to have been written by someone with a bottle of whiskey by his side. the film's first scene when bronco messes up his act and injures a woman with his knife is worth the price of admission.
it is not just another comedy film. bronco is a character with some depth. he stands on grassy land and tells his sidekick (scatman crothers) "dont you love such wide open spaces?" bronco was a shoe salesman who left his job because he hated living in the city and wanted to become a cowboy. he has once shot his wife and spent 7 years in folsom prison. everyone in his group is some kind of criminal. the message seems to be that let these sons and daughters of the soil be what they want to be and live how they want to in these small american cities and let the city folk mind their own business.
some people might dismiss this as a guilty pleasure. but why feel guilty? BRONCO BILLY is among the best of american cinema. i would watch this over any of the overrated films modern filmakers like NOLAN or PTA.
(8/10)

I liked bronco billy - much more than I thought I would. It had this endearing pathos, as well as the humor, from what I remember.
