Probably The Joker as Batman was one of my earliest memories of going to the movies. Second pick would be Jack Torrance but One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is amazingly suited to his rebellious nature. However, Chinatown is in serious need of a revisit.

Definitely a mix between Batman and the Shining. Of course, he was positively awesome in Chinatown and A Few Good Men.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with The Shining coming a close second.

Believe it or not, as great as he was in so many roles, Garret Breedlove in Terms of Endearment is my favorite (probably because it was so against type).

Either Jack Torrance or Col. Jessup

Probably the Shining because its so iconic. (But its not my favorite of his roles. I like Cuckoos Nest personally.)

So many of his early roles have become so iconic. I would say the top three would be R.P. McMurphy, Jake Gittes, and Jack Torrance.

The Joker is usually the first role of his that comes to my mind, but his best performance was Jack Torrance. It’s between those two for sure.

I would have to say his role as McMurphy in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' even though I saw that one much later than some of his other major roles. I can only attribute that to how much that movie has generally seeped into popular culture.

Before reading the posts here the first one that came to mind was Chinatown 1974, and then As Good as It Gets 1997, but can't decide.

A common criticism of Jack is that he's "just Jack" in all his roles (or at least his major ones). But people forget his "non-Jack" turns in movies like Blood & Wine, The Crossing Guard, Hoffa, About Schmidt, etc.

He's so prolific and skilled, but what I think is my favorite one is Melvin Udall in "As Good as It Gets" with Greg Kinnear, Cuba Gooding and Helen Hunt.

That blotch on his neck is always way too obvious.
