McMurphy in The Cuckoo's Nest is always first to spring to mind.

A common criticism of Jack is that he's "just Jack" in all his roles (or at least his major ones). But people forget his "non-Jack" turns in movies like Blood & Wine, The Crossing Guard, Hoffa, About Schmidt, etc. Agreed. He DOES have his trademark roles, but he also has the skill to pull of other personas. I think he's one of the few that can do this. There are lots and lots of actors who tend to play a single kind of role...or a category of roles and they become quite famous doing that. And, unlike some other viewers, I don't have a problem with that. Some of my favorite actors play category roles. But to play a lot of different roles convincingly takes an actor of a different level of skill entirely and I think Nicholson has that skill.

For me personally I can't really say anything stands out over the other in terms of his role. but on a mainstream level I would guesstimate, in terms of role, he's probably most affiliated with one of the following movies...
-Batman (1989) -A Few Good Men (1992) ("You can't handle the truth") -The Shinning (1980) -One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) -As Good as It Gets (1997)
p.s. although in terms of movies he's been in that I personally like the most... 1)The Departed(7/10) 2)The Last Detail(6.5-7/10) 3)About Schmidt(6-6.5/10). but there is more I like which is pretty much only... As Good as It Gets (1997)/One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) which I gave both a 6/10(a mild Thumbs Up).

He played a good weirdo in the original Little Shoppe of Horrors. Still amuses me that Hazel Court, co-star of THE RAVEN, where Nicholson played the son of Peter Lorre, said many years later how amazing it was that he became such a star. She called him "Little Jack Nicholson."

For me his connection to the Joker in Batman has been somewhat diminished by the Nolan Batman films and the impact they and Ledger in playing the same role have had. I associate him more now with One Flew and to a slightly lesser degree The Shining.

I always think of Chinatown even tho that’s not a fave of mine. I picture him with his bandaged nose.
