On this date, 90 years ago, Popeye the Sailor made his debut in Seger's comic strip "Thimble Theatre". After a 70 year courtship, he and Olive Oyl finally married. I haven't heard anything, so I imagine they're still together.

It's been widely rumored but I am unsure if confirmed that Sony opted out on a new animated Popeye film...for The Emoji Movie.

Debut of Robin Williams, Linda Hunt (playing Popeye's Mudder) and of Bill Irwin. Park that disbelief at the door and it's a fun way to spend a bitta time. IMDb Link with cool TRIVIA on page 2

I heard that Popeye was finally hit on the head from a large can of spinach that didn't open when he tried to squeeze it. It is rumored that he can no longer remember who Olive Oyl is due to his head injury.

I hate Olive Oyl. What a you know what. Every short, Olive Oyl starts out with Popeye. He's not a catch (like she is), but he treats her good. Then she sees Bluto and kicks Popeye to the door. But when ol' Bluto tries to rape her, who does she scream for? Yup. After Popeye got the crap kicked out of him. Then he eats the spinach, thumps Bluto and forgives that skinny bitch.

Yes, Olive was a fickle pickle sometimes, especially in those "Famous" cartoons of the '50's. But there were some where she despised Bluto from the start. For example, the very first Popeye cartoon. And the classic SINBAD THE SAILOR.

Yes, the Max Fleischer shorts were not as formulaic as the Famous ones. I'm more familiar with the Famous ones though. I always thought some of the antagonists in the later (stinky) Famous shorts were invented by Famous Studios. The Sea Hag and Alice the Good. But they were in the Thimble Theater strips. My one big peeve on the B/W Popeye, he always mumbled. Drove me batty trying to figure out what he was saying.

TheGoodMan19 Popeye's mumble is like Donald Duck's sputters and squawks in that very little (if any) information is actually conveyed via their "words".

There were a number of cartoons, I think from Hanna-Barbera Studios, that portrayed Olive Oyl and Alice the Goon as WAC's who drove their CO crazy. Kinda like Gomer Pyle or Beetle Bailey. In the '60's, there was also a series of Popeye cartoons from Gene Dietch. They were beyond horrible; IMHO, they should all be piled up together and burned!

The comic strip "Popeye" is shown daily on Comics Kingdom.com. I'm glad, because the strip was "on suspension" for some time.
Here's the story:
Olive Oyl had become addicted to the Home Shopping Network, and had made numerous purchases there. In gratitude, the network sent her a free gift: a "Baby Bluto" doll! Well, Olive was furious, and she told Popeye, "I'm sending this 'baby' back where it came from!" Unfortunately, she was overheard by two passing priests, who immediately jumped to the conclusion that the lady was planning to get an abortion! The nosy priests spread the false news around, and, as a result, poor Olive was publicly shunned!
I don't know how (or if) the story ended, for the artist was immediately fired from the syndicate. I'm guessing that he had been reinstated, for the CK strip is drawn in his style.

I remember Dietch getting his claws on the later Tom and Jerry toons. They were unwatchable, even for a kid.

We look at Popeye with modern eyes and don't see what the original audience saw back in the 1930's. Popeye is a film that takes on immigration. Many Americans were alarmed at the massive wave of Europeans arriving in major cities from 1880-1924 (when quotas were passed by Congress).
Popeye is a Red/White/Blue all American sailor who has to deal with Wimpy (German stereotype) Olive Oil (Italian) and Bluto (Italian or Russian). In several of the cartoons, Popeye punches Bluto so hard he goes over the ocean back to his own country.

I recall Popeye cartoons from WW2, still aired in the late 50s, with our sailor hero beating up toothy "Japs" and sinking their battleships.
