I've always found it really cozy either being in or just the thought of being in a coffee shop really early in the morning when it's still dark, nice and relaxing.

I've been an early riser my whole life, so I really enjoy sitting in a diner and having breakfast at 5 am while listening to the chatter from other patrons and the morning news shows on TV.

When I was young and single, I loved being in a diner in the early morning hours having breakfast and coffee, there was always a certain "Quietness" about it. When I married, my husband and I always stopped for coffee and breakfast in the early hours before we went somewhere on the weekends - no noisy families with kids running amok.

When I worked I would sometimes leave for work early and go to a place like this and have coffee and a donut or two. Very relaxing before going to my noisy workplace.

I'm sometimes up so early that I go to Starbucks right after they open, but it's 6 or so.

I'm always up for coffee and breakfast. The earlier the better! π

Are both of those for you? That'd be the case for me, for sure!

Not so much the coffee shops (not many good ones near my house) but on the weekends and when I'm off from work, there's something so pleasant about sitting in the bagel shop, slowly eating breakfast, reading the paper at a nice, slow, relaxed pace. You can't do that in restaurants or even diners anymore, but the bagel place is always welcoming the leisurely paced person.
Not at 5 am though. 5 am is gym time!

I don't recall ever having the experience ... at least, that early. It does have a cozy sound to it, though.
I used to drive to Oregon, every fall, to visit school friends. But, it's been about 5 years, since I last made the journey. I would hit-the-road between 4 - 5, and stop at a favorite diner that was about 2 hours from home. By that time, though, the early breakfast crowd had already arrived.

ZolotoyRetriever heard of this place? www.seattletimes.com/life/food-drink/seattles-dacha-diner-might-be-your-new-favorite-place/?amp=1Seattleβs new Dacha Diner on Capitol Hill has so many really, really good things to eat that itβs difficult to know where to begin. You might want to try the latkes first, for they are perfect: Made with a batter of potato, onion and matzo meal, theyβre lacy-golden-brown crisped on the outside, soft to the point of melty inside, exactly salty enough, served nice and hot. Things can take a little time at Dacha Diner, but they come at the temperature that makes ancestors somewhere cluck approvingly while watching you eat it all up. An order of three potato pancakes, two eggs β mine were ideally over-easy β and two thick triangles of beautiful wheaty-rye toast, plus, of course, sour cream and applesauce, costs $10. If you just want a side of latkes, that might be the best five bucks you can spend in Seattle right now (unless youβre skilled at making them, in which case, may I come over?). Dachaβs Adjarian khachapuri costs $13 and is substantial enough to share. Right now, I am eating leftover khachapuri that I stuck in a hot oven for 10 minutes, and I could not be happier (sorry, keyboard). During dinnertime hours (Wednesday through Friday only), they serve other versions, like maybe one with chard, or one topped with soujouk (or sujuk), a Balkan cured sausage from Georgeβs (also an undersung local hero). These are $13 each, too, and could probably cost half that much again more. But if brisket is special to you, begin with that at Dacha β a big plate, pot-roast-tender, with mashed potatoes is another bargain at $13. But wait; before that, you should probably have a small bowl of borsch ($4, and really medium-sized; they hold the T, to be properly Russian, as βborschtβ is a German spelling). Dachaβs borsch is chunky and rich, with a tiny vinegar-and-lemon bite to even out the sweetness of the beets. You can, and probably should, if youβre meat-inclined, add big chunks of beef ($3 extra).

nutsberryfarm π: haven't heard of it, but it sounds great. I would imagine they do really good cabbage rolls, too (one of my favorite Slavic dishes). Will hopefully check it out one of these days. Thanx.

I know EXACTLY what the OP is referring to, and agree COMPLETELY! I've worked for FedEx for a number of years, and every day on my way home from work, (usually sometime between 6-9 a.m.), I'd stop at our local McD's to have a soda (I don't drink coffee) and read the paper (and by that, I mean the PAPER VERSION.....because, you know.....I'm OLD!!). To anyone who hasn't experienced it, he/she is right.....there is something VERY comforting about being in a place like that, while it's still (relatively) quiet, with just the sound of the employees in the background, a few people coming and going, and maybe some VERY light Muzak playing in the background, and the BEST part, being able to sit for an hour or so, completely unrushed and relaxed, catching up on all the scores and games from the day/night before. THAT, my friends, is a GREAT way to 'decompress' from a hectic morning.... SAVE FERRIS
