The Spiral Staircase(1946) The Uninvited (1944) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Doctor Zhivago (1965) I always loved this shot, highlighting the eyes, though it may not be exactly what you're looking for:

Shanghai Express (1932) . Josef von Sternberg was a highly creative cinematic artist, he produced films that are highlighted throughout with striking pictorial compositions, illuminated with stylistic black-and-white chiaroscuro cinematography... Lee Garmes ASC may have been awarded the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, it was however according to Dietrich, director von Sternberg who was personally responsible for enhancing her femme features with the camera. The famous iconic image below was created using Butterfly lighting a technique using only two lights. Featuring strong light falling on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the upper cheeks, which cast a distinct shadow below the nose that often looks like a butterfly...

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Samwise Gamgee casts quite an intimidating shadow apparently, but the orcs underestimate him when his true self is revealed...which they pay the price for.
The Lion King (1994). Scar's demise is actually pretty nasty when you think about it, but the movie uses shadow effectively to 'get around' showing too much.

A shadow briefly comes across Josh Brolin's neck at 0:25 which for an instant looks like a noose. A portent of doom if ever there was one.
