Best example I can think of is 2013's Oblivion starring Tom Cruise, it had a decent opening but had it not faced Iron Man 3 in its third week there is a good chance it would have made Edge of Tomorrow numbers. Mind you it didn't flop but still it was imo a better movie than IM3 yet Universal said screw it and hurt the films B/O potential, at least imo.
Name films that got overlooked thanks to bigger movies and dumb studio decisions.

Yeah Power Rangers qualifies imo, it had a good opening considering the competition but it dropped big time this week because of even more competition, or was it just a bad film? Unsure as I haven't seen it.

The Nice Guys comes to mind. It was released the same weekend as Neighbors 2 and The Angry Birds Movie. Whoever was responsible for that decision ought to be shot.
