I didn't care too much for the newer Mortal Kombat X. I much prefer the PS2 era of the series, but I'm a fan nonetheless.

I never moved passed the snes/Sega era. You haven't missed anything. Mortal Kombat 4 was the last decent one. I still play the first two every now and then.

As a kid I loved the first two games, then lost interest, but I bought Mortal Kombat X on a Steam sale for $10 and started playing the story mode...and it's awesome.
The story mode is surprisingly fun and has some great cinematics that add weight to each fight, and there are great new characters, like that Mayan emperor dude who harnesses the power of the sun, his insane insectoid second-in-command, and the kid who's Kung Lao's nephew.
You can also play as Predator or Alien with DLC, and that's awesome. The Predator is perfect, with three different styles you can choose from, perfect reproductions of the sounds it makes in the movies, and some awesome movies and combos based on things we've seen in the movies -- like self-destruct, that shoulder-mounted laser cannon, the metal claws they use, etc.
There are of course arcade modes, ladder modes, an online system with factions, and a "Krypt" where you can unlock extras as you win more matches and accumulate XP. Overall it's an awesome game.
After that I had also heard good things about MK9 so I bought that dirt cheap on another Steam sale, and that game is pretty badass too. I especially like MK9's version of Noob Saibot, with those crazy shadow moves he does.

A lot of people just stick to the classics. I like the old games, they have their charm and I wax nostalgic over them easily, especially MK2. However, in terms of gameplay and content, the PS2 era games did it for me.

Mortal Kombat X was the first one I've bought since maybe PlayStation and I really enjoyed it. I like how they've added in a story mode where you're playing as different characters at different points.

However, in terms of gameplay and content, the PS2 era games did it for me. Mortal Kombat games have never been the best in terms of gameplay as far as I know. MK2 & especially MK3 had very limited computer iq with next to no variation of fighting techniques. Street Fighter games were way ahead during the 2D era. When Mortal Kombat went 3D with MK4 Tekken and especially Virtua Fighter had already set a new standard for that kind of thing. However I always preferred the MK mythology, characters and Shaolin/Netherworld background art to Capcom kind of innocent cartoon style. I realize that caring about the mythology/background story for a fighting game probably sounds lame but I loved that stuff as a kid. Mortal Kombat really lost me when they introduced characters like Predator and Freddy Krueger to the series, even if the games in some ways became better.

Why do you think I loved the PS2 era games? They had a ton of content that offered bits and pieces of MK lore that you had to sort of put together yourself to get the full story.

MK4 was fun, though MK Trilogy on the N64 was my favorite.

Khameleon was exclusive to the N64 version, she was cool.

I played through it all, but I honestly did not like it. I don't like the gameplay of MK9 and MKX, but I do like the storyline.

I really enjoyed the 2011 Mortal Kombat myself. Apart from that, MK 1&2 are classics. I remember playing the first one on arcade, and was amazed at how real everything looked. And here's something for those who like a bit of trivia:

MK4 was the last one I really enjoyed though objectively looking it wasn't that great, with really restricted fighting system compared to Tekken, Virtual Fighter and other bigger competitors. I like it that they went back to MK2 style and mood with the mythology stuff and Netherworld backgrounds instead of MK3 subway stations and street cops as fighters.
My biggest gripe is that none of the new characters were really interesting. Fujin was good he had already appeared in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Quan Chi was ridiculous and making the final boss Shinnok playable from the beginning was something really lame.
