'The Lure' (2015, Córki dancingu - Agnieszka Smoczynska)
A pair of mermaids are incorporated into a cabaret show but they struggle to suppress their natural instincts. Agnieszka Smoczynska's fantasy picture 'The Lure' is her first feature-length film to be released theatrically. I'm excited by the prospect of seeing 'Fugue' (2018) which is her second (she's also directed a television movie).

* 'Screw-In' (2014, Wkreceni - Piotr Weresniak) / 'Screw-In 2' (2015, Wkreceni - Piotr Weresniak)
A trio of wholesome Catholic car factory workers who've been laid off are mistaken for high-flying businessmen on a trip. The smash hit 'Screw-In' comedy franchise is the brainchild of filmmaker Piotr Weresniak who directed the second installment in the rebooted 'Oh, Carol' series. I can't bring myself to like either picture but these films showcase Polish pastel architecture which is nice. 'Screw-In' and 'Screw-In 2' might appeal to fans of Ryszard Zatorski's feminist romcom 'Tips For Cheating' (2017) and Slovak director Marta Ferencova's sensible romance 'All Or Nothing' (2017).

It's a proud week for Poland as novelist and screenwriter Olga Tokarczuk receives the Nobel Prize for Literature. She joins some great Poles of the past, on whom this honour has been bestowed.
Congratulations, Ms. Tokarczuk!

-Knife In The Water (1962) -A Generation (1955) -Interrogation (1989) -Kapo (1960) -The Last Day of the Summer (1960) -Border Street (1948) I've seen Gillo Pontecorvo's drama 'Kapo' available on dvd. As a fan of Susan Strasberg, I was looking for some of her movies to watch. I'll check again, see what prices it's selling at. Thanks.
The Poles I know told me this week that they voted for different parties in the election that's just been, though none of them said they'd voted for the populist ruling party, which triumphed by a considerable margin. They all think the welfare handouts are vote winners that'll come back to bite Poland, but time will tell. Both the company I work for, and our host company, do a lot of work with Krakow and Warsaw.

Pawel Pawlikowski
'The Woman In The Fifth' (2011, La femme du Vème - Pawel Pawlikowski)
A college lecturer moves to Paris, France to be closer to his daughter, only to become embroiled in a dangerous affair with a mysterious widow. I like this atmospheric mystery directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. I've also seen Pawlikowski's religious drama 'Ida' (2013) which draws heavily from the the Polish Film School movement and the British Free Cinema movement but blends its influences well. I'm looking forward to seeing his period piece 'Cold War' (2018) which received some strong notices.

'Elles' (2011, Sponsoring - Malgorzata Szumowska)
A journalist in Paris, France investigates why female students often turn to prostitution. 'Elles' is the only film I've seen from director Malgorzata Szumowska. It's a cold, glacial affair. I prefer Emmanuelle Bercot's similarly-themed French drama 'Student Services' (2010) released the previous year. According to internet movie database trivia, Emma Watson selected 'Elles' as her favourite film of 2011 at Indiewire.
