To me, lyrics are sung in a song. If the lyrics are just spoken over music, that is not a song. It may have good lyrics, they may rhyme, it may require artistry, talent and skill. But it is not a song. Just a poem spoken over music.
What do you think?

I don't think Rap is really music. It is poetry with a beat machine added in.

But I think there's a talent in using your vocal chords and voice that distinguishes really anybody who can perform without a microphone. If we're going by just the singing, just what they do with their voice, then I think it's kind of its own instrument. Rap and most songs aren't just about words. Maybe it's a stretch but I think about DMX and his dog barking sound effects. As far as I'm concerned, that's as valid a part of his music and demonstration of his talent as his lyrics. Anybody can write a song but how you sing it gives it deeper meaning. For me it's a kind of free styling without words which I think counts. Eminem does it a lot too.

I suppose it depends on if you'd call an instrumental a song instead of a composition.

Nobody is saying rap does not require talent. We are just trying to distinguish between a song, and a poem with music.

But if it is just somebody talking in rhyme - with or without music - its a poem. Then rap does qualify by your definition. It is indeed music and the vast majority does include a melody.

A song with singing has the vocals being sung with --- melody and music. Rap may have music. But the vocals are not sung. The vocals have no melody.

Whether it's sung, spoken, rhymed, or scatted, I tend to think of vocals as another instrument. If the vocals of a rap song were replaced with, say, a piano playing the exact notes of the vocals, there would be no argument. I don't see why it would be any different simply because the notes are being played with words.

Rap may have music. But the vocals are not sung. The vocals have mo melody. So if somebody rapped over an instrumental, would it stop being a song?

If there's a melody involved, technically rap is music.

Nobody is saying rap does not require talent. We are just trying to distinguish between a song and a poem with music. I was making that distinction. The addition of music gives the singer something to cooperate with and there's a relationship between them that can't be matched with say, reading a poem with no music. They do things with their voices that go beyond the call of reciting a poem. I brought up Eminem and DMX' sound effects because they remind me of bebopping and scatting.

Well, in that case, how about a speech with music in the background. Also many movies (and TV shows) have background music to heighten drama. Would you consider those songs too? Spoken words with music ?? ?? ??
