If you have an instrumental song, and somebody talks over that instrumental song, it is somebody talking over a song. Awesome. I don't suppose you would agree that rap is somebody talking over a song? Definitely. Often a popular oldy.

Definitely. Often an popular oldy. Then why is "rap song" an oxymoron? Is it a song or not? It is not. It is someone talking over a song. Quite frankly, rarely do raps talk over a song. They usually just take a riff from a popular song and play it over and over.

Then why is "rap song" an oxymoron? Is it a song or not? It is not. It is someone talking over a song. So a song is a song until somebody talks over it, then it becomes rap, thus not a song. Got it. I believe it's called sampling. To be fair, though, repetition of a riff as a backdrop for the vocals is not exclusive to rap.

To be fair, though, repetition of a riff as a backdrop for the vocals is not exclusive to rap. Unlike a new song with a new melody and song structure and possibly lyrics sung in harmony with the song, raps often take a riff from an old song and talk over it. Raps maybe ingenious, creative, and artistic. But it is a whole different process having little to nothing to do with the melody. A band creates a musical melody. They write lyrics and a melody in harmony with the musical melody. They play the music and sing the lyrics. What do raps typically do? Write lyrics and say them. Not as impressive to me. Less talent. Less skill. Less creativity.

There is "musique concrete" that is just a collage of ambient noise and sounds. There's tribal music that just consists of chants over rhythmic drum beats. There's dissonant avant garde jazz that will sound far less musical than rap to most ears. Music is whatever sounds that we happen to frame as music. Any other definition is going to be too narrow.

Crappy un-organized noise is not music just because somebody says it is. So it's not music just because you say it isn't? FTR, I tend to agree that this is not music, but if someone else thinks it is, then it is to them and who am I to say otherwise?

It may mean something. It may elicit an emotional response in the viewer. But without melody, it is not music. Music is not subjective. Beauty is. Good and bad are when it comes to entertainment. But not music. That performance piece would not be a song on an album or CD. It would just be a track.
