Now that they have decided that they will be my constant companions, could you tell me what things I can give them to eat? I will just put those things outside my window and may be a bit of water too. Pigeons will eat almost anything provided they can swallow it. I suppose the same is true of most animals, though. I once saw a grackle eat from a discarded box of Cheerios by looping the rings on its beak, submerging them in a puddle to make them mushy, and then swallowing them. Anyway, simple birdseed is best if you're going to feed pigeons. It's better for them and they seem to prefer it. You can toss them bread but it's not as nutritious. Just a heads up, though. If you start feeding, expect a lot of company. They declined my first offering. I had put some biscuits (cookies) and they didn't eat it. I then thought of putting some flaked almonds but I didn't do so after reading a few websites that mentioned that it could be dangerous to feed birds as the food you keep for them may invite rodents and pests. At the moment I am not sure of continuing with my offering because I certainly don't want to see rodents. Plus, I am on a one month break in which I have to study almost all-day everyday so definitely don't want too much noise around here. Those two birds do make a bit of noise at times and as you say food may invite more.
BTW, I have a question - I thought the two birds who I always see on the space adjoining my window (it's basically a little space to keep old styled air-conditioners) would claim that space all to themselves and won't let other birds enter it as it is now their territory. Like in animals. But you say my keeping food might invite more birds. But you may be right because my mom feeds birds and she says a hell lot of them roam over her house's roof.

Occasionally, I'll hear birds of various varieties talk in their sleep from a tree late at night. Yeah I hear noises from the trees at night sometimes.

I wonder the same thing about raccoons. Those things are gigantic. Where do they go during the day?

@forceghostackbar
I had two families of them in my attic on different occasions and one family lived in the space above the ceiling of the sun-room.. They now live in the granary since the holes they made have been found and repaired AGAIN !
The babies are cute BUT they do not belong indoors OR in my sweet corn patch.
They (and woodchucks) also live in woodpiles and in open sheds. Away from houses, they make homes in brush and in the branches of trees.

They're so gigantic. It's hard to believe they're hiding around the neighborhood during the day without being seen.

I had a squirrel in my wall when I was in high school. Those things are extremely annoying. They scratch constantly like nervous maniacs.

@forceghostackbar
Also had squirrels in the house … turns out they can jump from the 3rd floor attic to the ground without being hurt ! Caught them in a have-a-heart trap and then let them loose rather than re-locating them as happens with the racoons …

Some place warm. For example, where Catman lives, the winter crows (who are rude and obnoxious, not at all like the summer crows) flit about town annoying people during the day, but at night they roost on the university campus over the vents for the heat tunnels. Catman. I call on your great expertise, sir! I let this pigeon dirty my window and didn't disturb its nest because she had laid eggs. She has two chicks now. She & her husband takes turns of 12 hours to protect the squabs. I don't want them to go hungry so I slipped a bit of cashew nut, almonds, and walnuts broken into tiny pieces just 4 inches away from her nest. I did that 1 hour ago. But she still hasn't eaten them. Do these pigeons not eat nuts? Or is she scared of the new supply of food? I was about 6 inches away from her when I put the food but she didn't try to go away so seems to be trusting enough of me. But she is not eating the nuts.

She is right now sitting on her babies and that's why they are not visible.

Every night, just past midnight, a single songbird trills outside my window for about 30 seconds (as it did just a few minutes ago). Then it goes back to sleep with all the other birds. I think it has OCD and just wants to be the first bird to sing in the morning.

Nests, I guess? Some birds prefer to stay in moist and dimly lit places near ventilation shafts or pipes.

I don't know about their diet, but probably plain bird seed would be best. They may also eat insects; it varies among types of birds. But what a special process you are being able to watch!

Yeah, I did some research on good websites and it seems that the pigeons produce a special thing which is called crop milk and when they are feeding the chicks they don't eat anything. They produce very little of it and even though both parents take on 12-hour shifts they can only produce as much milk as to properly feed 2 babies. That's why they almost always produce only 2 eggs. Adaptation. I have decided not to feed her from my side as long as she is raising her babies. But after that, I will do friendship with both of them as I have seen on youtube a few vids that show how to do that. But her squabs are very beautiful and sometimes I can see them.
Thanks for your reply!

Good question. I've always wondered that myself. They can be so chirpy, loud, and active during the day, but at night, they get so so quiet as a mouse.

I think A lot of them go to sleep in the trees where I live. I have seen some of them wake up early in the morning and come out of them and I have also seen them having fights with bats in trees in the night.

Well, both the birds have turned into villains now. I can't even imagine how parents can be so evil. Their kids are almost always hungry. And she has laid another egg today. She hasn't even fed the kids even once today. Even her mate is a disgusting creature who is doing nothing. I don't even know what to do. Kids have rejected everything I offered them. and on top of that, they have made my window worse looking than a mountain of garbage. Although it is not that thing that is making me angry. I was already told by my cousin that my place will be completely dirty if I allow them to live in the little place on my window. I wanted the kids to live and so I didn't remove their nests. But they are worse than human beings. They produce more and more kids and care about eggs but not about the real chicks who are living today. Her kids have grown pretty big but they can't fly. I think she chose a bad place to make a nest in the first place. My window slab is just as thick as one brick so the kids have not seen much beyond that little place. Worse of all I am leaving this house pretty soon. The flat owner might kick them out of their home soon as I don't think they will give such a house to a new tenant. Oh, I thought I was doing something good. And it has turned my life even more difficult because I keep worrying about things to come.
