Less so than the Wire which arguably only had one great season, the first, Sopranos held strong for three. There's a few local sports talk show hosts who say both are the best shows ever made. After seeing season 1 and seeing your statement, I'm beginning to doubt both. I've seen several crime dramas or thrillers that are better: Breaking Bad, Justified, The Americans, Better Call Saul.

Then it shifts gears a lot with season 4 and 5. To its credit it took the show in a new direction, which takes balls. I just didn’t like it as much. Season 4-5 I still like tho.

As with many shows, their first seasons are always "playing nicely" as I call it. Many great series started out kind of in the slow, meandering lane.
I still like how deeply human they made Tony. I loved those ducks!

S1 was good but it gets better from there. And whoever mentioned the dream sequences, I felt the same way watching them but if you read the big multi page synopsis of the ending here which discusses a lot of these dreams, then go back and watch them again, you will see all the tie-ins that bring various plot points and references together. As it turns out the show is like a piece of great literature. There are a lot of different levels of things going on, in particular regarding post-911 social commentary.

I completely respect and admire what The Sopranos did for TV. They really started this premium tv trend. However, for a show itself, yes I agree it’s highly overrated. I watched a couple episodes into season 3 before giving up. I certainly wouldn’t call it bad. But it’s very pretentious and meandering. It thinks it’s much more smarter and thought provoking than it actually is. I got to a point where I was just like I hate every character and storyline.

I prefer The Wire, Deadwood and Six Feet Under over The Sopranos. Considering people call it the best show of all time, there's a lot of shows I like more than it. Granted, I've only seen the first season, but it's the highest rated one and I thought it was just okay.

I have wanted to watch The Sopranos for years and just recently finally decided to dive in. I'm about six or seven episodes into the first season, and I gotta say I'm not that impressed. It's okay, but not mind-blowingly good. The first season seems a little amateurish to be honest. The clips I've seen on YouTube make the show seem so much better. Is the first season a weaker one? I don't even know if I am going to bother with it after the first season. I have never seen it. I don't understand this fascination with bad people. We all know the mafia is bad. Why would anybody want to see them go about spreading murder, mayhem and misery?

I rewatched it recently and found the first season was a little off. I still thought it was good but felt the show got more polished in the second season and onward. It still has some hit or miss episodes where the creator dabbles into the surreal, but for the most part I prefer the follow up seasons. Season 2 has Ritchie Aprille and he’s pretty awesome. Right?! Something is definitely off about this. The first season is rated 100% at Rotten Tomatoes. People say it's the best show of all time. And I'm watching it and all I can think is exactly what you said: It's off. It's a little amateurish imo.
I actually thought "maybe it gets better" too. I'd been watching clips of it on YouTube and thought "Wow, I gotta see this." It's why I started watching. Come on bro. You're trying too hard. Amateurish? Seriously? We're all REALLY impressed that you're NOT really impressed with a show that both critics and fans hold in high regard. You're so edgy and hip. YAY!!!!! How upset are you that no one said "you just don't get it"? Keep posting and maybe someone will. Then you will really earn your hipster wings. HOORAY for kuato. He's such an individual.

I literally watched about ten minutes of one episode, changed the channel and never watched again.

Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire
Probably the four best shows ever made.
Tony Soprano may be the best TV character of all time along with Walter White and Jack Bauer. I just highly disagree with this thread. The show was VERY well done, especially acting-wise.

Some guy gets whacked. Another few guys get into an altercation. This mobster is having a beef with another. Tony goes to therapy, where we don't really see any results of it helping him to be a better man, he is still a heartless thug and murderer who even threatens and sexually assaults his therapist who continues to see him for gawd knows why. Rinse and repeat for all the other episodes.

Which character says "fuck" more - Tony Soprano or Tony Montana? I find that what they say even more is, "Hooo!" and "There he is!" That's how they start each script. Int. day at the Bada Bing. Tony walks in. Paulie: "Hoooo!" Big Pussy: There he is!

It feels so amateur. I'm about 3 or so episodes into season 2 (I took a break) and can already see an increased production value.

I just highly disagree with this thread. The show was VERY well done, especially acting-wise. Overrated. Watched season 1 and haven't watched a full season since. Seen the odd episode here and there, but it's little more than blood and tits. Take out the extreme graphic nature of the show and nowhere near as many people would watch.
EXCELLENT SHOW. Damn near perfect to me. BB, The Americans, Justified, season 1 of Fargo, season 1 of True Crime would all rank ahead of what I've seen of GoT or Sporanos.
Meh. Season 2 seems like an improvement. Best character of all-time?! Tony is a cliche mobster. Any main character from Goodfellas or Casino is better.
Never saw it.
