...turned out to be an utter disappointment?

What album you eagerly anticipated turned out to be an utter disappointment? I can think of a couple of examples. In 2000, I saw Dio (twice) on his " Magica" tour. After one of these shows, somebody was handing out promo CDs for what was then SinOMatic's upcoming self-titled debut album. It had two full songs and clips of three others. I liked what I heard and waited months for the album to be released. Back then there was no YouTube, and I had nothing to go by but the promo CD. When I finally purchased the album and listened to the whole thing, I discovered I only liked five songs off an eleven track album. I guess I wasn't the only one who was disappointed, as it appears SinOMatic never released a followup. In August 2017, I first heard a demo of the track "Loser's Game" by Finland's Frozen Land, and I really liked it. In April 2018, I first heard a pre-production version of the song "Mask of the Youth", and I liked that too. I waited for the full album to come out, periodically checking on its status. Finally, on New Year's Day 2019, I discovered that album had been released and was on YouTube. And apart from the two songs that had been released early, I didn't like it! Thankfully, in this YouTube era, I didn't waste any money on Frozen Land's self-titled debut album.

Apart from a few decent (and maybe one really good one) tracks (which happened to be the singles) the rest was boring generic filler. They sold out bigtime.

Silly me, I thought the Stones could do no wrong. I had Tattoo You, Exile, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Some Girls. How coujld I go wrong buying the new Stones album? I guess it was better than Dirty Work.

Traveling Wilburys - Vol 3 The Slits - Trapped Animal
Lennon's Double Fantasy, initially, but as a deathstimonial, it took on a different meaning.

I thought the same thing when it was first released. 10 years later, I gave it another spin and changed my mind. It's actually a pretty good record.

Damn. They made some great stuff in the late 90s/2000s. Very atmospheric, emotional and powerful music. Their albums from the early 2010s were quite good too, but different to what they were traditionally known for.

There are currently 127,187 bands in Encyclopaedia Metallum, and Within Temptation is one of those I wasn't familiar with. Unfortunately, the videos you posted didn't work in my country, but I found another version of the first one ("Memories") on the band's official YouTube channel and listened to that. The problem I have with bands like this and, e.g., Nightwish is they are too much "symphonic" and not enough "metal" for me. You can't bang your head to bands like that. I love me some female-fronted metal though. Here are some samples of what I've been buying: From 2015: From 2017: From 2018:

The two biggest disappointments I can recall were: Sigur Ros following up Agaetis Byrjun with the pretty damned dull (). Antony and the Johnsons taking 5 years to follow up their debut with I am a Bird Now, it getting huge critical acclaim, and all the camp joy and sparkle of the debut had been replaced with taste and songcraft and subtlety boredom.

Filth Pig by Ministry.
I mean, after hearing "AKA Psalm 69", "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Taste" and "The Land Of Rape And Honey", I was waiting with baited breath for the new Ministry album.
It's usually a gap of 2 years between albums for most artists. This one...was just over 3 years. So, I figured they were taking their time - making it perfect.
I guess not.
