Bad logic. If everyone did that, then how can the population ever grow? You need to stick with it. It's like people who join a multiplayer game server and then instantly leave when they see there are only a few players in there instead of waiting a short while for it to fill up. Where do you go to discuss a particular movie/TV show? Just checked it now. It’s sort of active, but not quite. If I try to make a thread on a board for a particular movie/show chances are I might not get many replies. What’s the point of making a discussion when you have almost no one to discuss it with? The only reason there's almost no one to discuss it with is because people do what you did. They leave when they see a lack of activity. Activity needs to be created. It doesn't come from nowhere. Do you think the IMDb boards had huge activity when they were first released? So if you went to an empty board and made a thread, there's a better chance that the next person who visits that board will respond. But if they went there and it was empty, they'd probably just leave.

What’s the point of making a discussion when you have almost no one to discuss it with? Reddit movie section has a lot of individual movie discussion threads that I've used. Please don't tell me you're talking about /r/movies. It's filled with shills and idiots. Also reddit threads cannot be bumped and are only respondable for 6 months. After that they become locked. Also many posts get buried down below and stupid "meme" posts are shown at the top due to having the most upvotes. Pretty useless for movie discussion. MovieChat is the way to go, as it works the same way as the IMDB boards did.

But I hear ya, just another option. I do use MovieChat. I like the "trending" spot as it might show a movie or TV show I haven't seen or thought of in a while.

No. Unless they employed full time moderators and an Admin and put phone and credit card verification on people's accounts it would only go back to being the same cesspool many boards had become before it was closed down. I miss some of the members I used to talk to on the old IMDB boards that didn't make the move to here and having individual boards for TV shows but I wasn't upset when it closed down 'cause too many people were ruining it for others. Being a cesspool was part of the charm of the IMDB boards IMO. I don't think that the message boards will be back but if they return, I rather see them in their original state.

Plus adding people to ignore was a very simple process and helped clean up the boards a lot. But for some reason a lot of people seemed to not use the ignore list. People like don't have a right to complain about trolls.

No chance. Businesses want less unpredictable chatter on their platforms. It's too risky for them.
Part of me wishes the internet stayed niche.

their sites popularity has went downhill drastically since the removal of their message boards I could see them opting to bring them back in the next three-four years It was too labor intensive monitoring all those boards. They were losing money.

No. There's nothing in it for them, or they would have done it already.

Maybe. If they could find or come up with some kind of software monitoring that wouldn't cost much to maintain. It would displease many,--and a lot of people would find their accounts banned--and yet there could be banning and then a grace period to rejoin; and then the Final Solution. This wouldn't be easy to come up with, as one man's troll is another man's best bud. Explicit sex chat couldn't be allowed; and yet what constitutes unacceptable behavior, more generally, isn't always easy to define.
Then there are those sticky issues, such as a post in a thread dealing with economic social changes in modern Shanghai bearing the subject title "Too Many Chinamen". Funny to some, offensive to others. Needless to say, any film set in China is going to feature Chinese people. What to do about a post complaining that there are "too damn many of them"? This doesn't sound serious to me, however I can understand someone taking it literally and being deeply offended. There's also the eternal question of whether a film can be exceedingly politically incorrect and be good or even great.

While trolling was definitely a problem, I feel that was a scapegoat in their decision to remove the boards. I think there were too many people speaking out against Hollywood's movies that they decided to take action and remove the boards. That way they could get people to move to places like reddit for to talk about movies, a site that is filled with shills who control the discussion. If you think about it, YouTube has "individual boards" too, for each video. Many of them filled with trolls, racists, sexists and just ignorant and dumb people in general, which is just as bad, if not worse than the type of people that could be found on the IMDb boards. Yet there is no full time moderators on there right? And that's Google, one of the biggest companies in the world. I think something that big is too hard to moderate. Have you checked out MovieChat yet? It is the successor to the IMDb boards. That place is a desert compared to here – and this place is a lot less busy than IMDb.

Do we know that IMDb is actually less popular than it was in the past? Does anybody have anything quantifiable in concrete that states they lost money or traffic over the last couple years?
I would go back if it was busier than this place, but companies are going out of their way to eliminate user/fan participation. Many online publications eliminated their comments section further articles, IMDb ditched their message boards, and now Rotten Tomatoes has made changes to their site, so people can't sabotage a movie's rating. The Internet is moving away from letting people offer their input. It's hard to blame these companies completely, because people act like animals behind the anonymity. You can't give people anything before it it eventually gets abused. These companies probably should've done a better job moderating to begin with, but they're not all to blame. The public definitely carries their fair share of the blame.

It's never busy and it's not uncommon for certain boards – even the ones – to not have any traffic for a few days at a time.
