It cost them not only advertising revenue, but diminished their clout in the film industry. I say within 5 years they come up with something similar. You mean they’ll force us to post via Facebook like most other sites with comment sections do.

As to the original question: Hey, they brought river otters back to Iowa after the species was essentially extinct in the state, so why not message boards?

As much as I'd like for that to happen, they probably won't do that anytime soon

I like it here. I like that we can share pictures and videos more easily, I feel that's an outstanding addition for film topics. I like the different fonts and colours that have been added. I don't miss the old imdb and feel they made a bad decision that affected their loyal users; should have just moderated the place to keep it reasonably civil and denounced the incessant bullying. Just my personal opinion.

I especially like the image posting here. The fewer words you have to write, the fewer mis-readings of intent you have to deal with

As for IMDB bringing back the boards, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of that.

I forgot about those two features; likes are a nice way to quickly acknowledge appreciation of somebody's time and effort, as well as the content of their posting.

petrolino Captain Spencersometimes the "likes" are funny … two posters will be in pitched battle with snark and f-bombs being tossed willy-nilly and yet they "like" each others posts. Often times it's used as a "yeah, I read your post, lets keep going " more than an actual "I liked what you had to say !" There are some players in the "games" board to "like" every entry in the game in order to announce that there has been a new post. A nice feature is that notifications can be turned off for individuals or whole boards if they are not wanted The "views" seems to be some sort of mathematical thingy and does not give a true picture of actual viewings. Only way to explain "views" in the 100s/1000s and single or double digit replies.
YES, spend way too much time noticing this stuff …

You also see with some posters - those who are resolutely negative and critical of other people's postings - that they appear to never find the time to like anybody else's posts. I think that can be just as telling, reinforcing the quality of the imdb2 system.

If anything the outrage that the media stirs up about trolls on the internet is getting worse not better. Censorship is only going to increase.
Btw, does this forum have any kind of moderation? New here, was wondering how strict it is.

It's extraneous stuff like this that no doubt turns many a "guest" away from becoming a participating member.... j/s

petrolino back to the "likes" … when starting threads I am never sure whether to "like": all replies to acknowledge them or none ~~ so that if I skip one or two in a thread, feelings won't be hurt or just the ones I particularly liked. I tend to do it hit or miss as I cannot make up my mind partly because … I know some people prefer the acknowledgement version and I have occasionally gotten snarky remarks and even a PM from the ones who feel left out if skipped … What usually happens is an acknowledging like for the first post from a participant ( if I like it ) and then folks are on their own and have to assume that their contributions are appreciated unless they hear otherwise ! But basically, it's really a win/win and lose/lose situation. But then, so is much of life <shrug>

Yes, it can be difficult to gage sometimes how best to respond. But I think people will usually recognise if your intentions are good. And you can't dilute the likes by liking everything. When there's a contribution to a thread that I like, that's often when I like it.

petrolino OR an occasional appreciative "^^^ " OR hanging out with folks who know that you like their contributions without having to tell them

What's your proof of this? It's not rocket science, fool. We all saw the ads while we were on IMDb's message boards. Message board users spent more time on the site than someone who was merely looking up stats on a movie. More time on the site equals more exposure to advertising. Thus, advertisers will buy more advertising. Guess who said this... Needham usually pointed out that their big name advertising wasn’t posted on the message boards when the subject was mentioned but perhaps Nimda is right, Amazon should be putting some of their profits into funding your site.
